This Labor day weekend a large family set up camp at Kalama beach like pretty much everyone else did. It was a perfect holiday weekend on the windward side, at least until many of the members of this large family started going to the bathroom (number 1) on one of the beach access trails nearby. Later they let one of their kids go number 2 on another one of the smaller access trails. Pretty disgusting huh? This family comes out pretty much every weekend and pulls the same crap (pun intended) and its bothering me off to the point I am considering reporting this behavior to the beach cops. What would you do?

Yuck. I go to Kalama almost every weekend since it isn't as crowded as Kailua beach park and easier parking. I've only seem the "beach cops" once, ironically over Labor Day Weekend on 2 motorized beach vehicles. And heck ya, report them. I've personally never seen that behavior.

Is there any way to mention to them that folks are beginning to notice and they could get into trouble if they didn't use the lua instead? Or there is a concern the Department of Health could shut down the beach, which could happen. Do you know any of their aunties so you could mention it to them in a round about way? Are there luas available? Should they be cleaned or something? Why would someone act that way?

There is a very large and clean lua available that you pass from the parking lot to the beach where everyone rinses off on the way back to the car - and well maintained - unlike the Waikiki ones.

Take a shovel, scoop up the mess and bring it back to them: "Hey, you lost something . . !"

Call them on it personally AND tell the beach cops.

I like the shovel idea but I'd sling it on their hood.
Or there is always a pellet gun when the pants are down............

Or put it in a brown paper bag, light it, and toss it on their blanket

A sign needs to be posted at parking areas / lua / beaches :

" Cameras may be recording those people that use the toilet ANYWHERE other than the designated toilet".

" Violators may see themselves on youtube and news media. $ FINES $ will accompany your celebrity status".

Unfortunately, respect for the environment doesn't seem to be a common thing here on the islands.

Here on the Big Island there are isolated beaches where locals camp that aren't organized camp sites. They just go down for the weekend to party. My friends and I go down there periodically to clean up all of the debris left from these campers, including trash, beer bottles, used diapers, etc. etc.

The preservationists will campaign to keep development away so as to preserve the "pristine environment" for Hawaiians. There appears to be a disconnect between someone's ideal and real life.
