Mulling offer to transfer to Oahu. Would be working in a downtown building. Will likely be solo (I'm 50, m) or with one of my older boys (18+). I'd love to rent somewhere more on the rural side, within 30 minutes and maybe near some restaurants...? Is there a upscale suburb maybe? Too much to ask? I'm reading like crazy... thanks.

Since Honolulu has some of the worse traffic in the nation, you don't get very rural 30 minutes from downtown in any direction.
If you are seeking "upscale" and want out of the main part of the city, I'd focus your search in the Kahala to Hawaii Kai area on the east side - or Kailua on the windward side.
Alternatively, you could also look up the Pali Highway in the Pacific Heights area - although it can rain a lot and you are further from the beaches.
Honolulu doesn't really do suburbs much. There are different areas of the city, but it's all sort of smushed together so you can't really tell when you leave one area and enter another until you are really familiar with the place.
Nuuanu/Pali area might be nice, although it generally gets a bit of rain. Hmm, how about the Kakaako area? It's got some upscale condos now. You'd just about be able to walk to work from there and omit all the traffic altogether. Ala Moana area, would be similar and there's loads of buses which go through Ala Moana. Having a car in downtown Honolulu is not a plus, really. You have to find a parking spot and then pay for a parking spot. Much easier to just not have a car at all.
Best thing is to get temporary living quarters for several weeks to a month and then scope out all the areas in person. Find out where you'll be working and then you'll be able to pick a spot that works really well for you.
Just out of curiosity, what are the rainy areas? Is Mililani a rainy spot?
Generally, the windward sides of the islands (Northeast) are rainier, while Leeward (Southwest) are drier due to the direction of our winds come from - the rain falls on those windward sides and then often gets blocked by the mountains and doesn't make it Leeward. There are exceptions - especially when the wind changes - or we get winter storms. And there are island dependencies depending on mountain locations, etc.
Mililani gets a fair amount of rain - but I wouldn't characterize it as "rainy".

Yeah, what he said.
Since you don't say where you're coming FROM, you really need to be on the island to decide where to settle. If you can afford it, check with the hotels and see if any will be able to offer you a month at a good rate, or rent a room.
Since your adult sons are wherever you live now, set it up so that you only take the absolute necessities, with everything else that you plan to bring packed so that they can ship to you once you're settled. This will make renting a room easier.
I'm going to break with the others here and tell you to rent a car. You're going to need to run around looking at rental housing and scoping out the areas that you think you would like to stay. You may need to be able to jump on short notice to go see a place, so The Bus won't work for you -- but look where the routes are, because you really want to be close enough to them if you're working downtown. It's a whole lot better to hop "Fasi's Limo" and ride into town rather than have to drive each way each day.
