Hawaii always seems to be the recommendation whenever anyone asks where is a good place to be homeless. Unless the state can establish a reputation of being the worst place to be homeless, those people spending their last dollar on a plane ticket will continue to arrive, expecting to sleep on the beach and live on coconuts and the fish that they catch.

I agree with everything you said sistah except, The Urban myth has it that some mainland states give homeless people one-way airline tickets to Hawaii to reduce their homeless populations, but there is scant evidence that that is accurate. In fact, a recent study reported that 40 percent of Hawaii's homeless had lived in the state their entire life. More than half were lifetime residents or people who lived in Hawaii a minimum of 20 years. Only 3.3 percent of the homeless had lived in Hawaii for one year or less.

Unlike the mainland,

Unlike the mainland where tough anti-homeless laws do work in getting the homeless to leave. The problem with Oahu is its an island, they have to go somewhere.

But what appears to be ignored is the causes, the same study as above said the main cause is largely because of an expensive and "very tight housing market."

That depends on the town; mainland is a big place.

SF seems to always have a homeless issue during the warm months (they do migrate away in the winter); and santa cruz too. Even in my small town of Palo Alto, we seem to have a couple. They tend to "camp" near highway off ramps at nights.

One thing that I don't see much in HI is traffic light panhandlers. Here in the bay area, we have very many.

Any homeless discussion needs to remember the following why many are homeless.

Many are mentally ill

Many are addicted to drugs or alcohol

Many are battered women.

Most are not employed (and Hawaii enjoys very unemployment rates).

So while it sucks if you are able bodied and the above doesn't apply to you that is a low percentage of the homeless.

According to stats the states with the highest concentrations of homeless people were Oregon (0.54 percent of the state’s population), Nevada (0.48 percent), Hawaii (0.47 percent) and California (0.43 percent).

But a more recent stat says Hawaii had 15,848 homeless people in 2006, an increase of about 800 people over 2005. Approximately 10,081 were on Oahu, 2,446 on Hawaii island, 2,526 on Maui, and 795 on Kauai. Two-thirds of the state's homeless were classified as unsheltered. Its probably doubled that now.

What is even more alarming is The study defined "at-risk" or “precariously housed" households as those households where occupants were three paychecks away from homelessness. "Hidden homeless" households are households with more than one family sharing accommodations. "Adequately housed" households are those not classified as at-risk or hidden homeless. According to the study, of the 907,883 persons in Honolulu in 2006, more than 64,000 were hidden homeless and about 170,000 were at risk.

Simple math you take the homeless counts and add the hidden homeless and those in danger just in honolulu. You have 249,848 in just 2006?

Also according to the University of Hawaii’s latest Homeless Services Utilization report nearly 14,000 people sought some form of homeless services across the state from July 2011 to June 2012 but that doesn't mean there are more homeless.

The second research topic covers the circumstances that lead to homelessness. Two causes that come to mind right away are the shortage of available housing, and the ever increasing cost of living, since gasoline, electricity bills, and water bills just keep getting higher without increases in income.* This is a very important issue because herein actually lies some of the answers as to what can be done to improve this dreadful situation.* There is another important element to the core problem of homelessness becoming such a fast growing societal problem and that has been the widespread loss of jobs.*

Large-scale downsizing in many different businesses across the nation has caused major foreclosures resulting in thousands of families being evicted and left homeless. Large-scale downsizing in many different businesses across the nation has caused major foreclosures resulting in thousands of families being evicted and left homeless.

From the same study:

An estimated 14% of adults who are living on the streets have jobs, but their income does not provide for the basic necessities of life such as shelter and food, many of them live in their cars.
