I live in Kailua and unless there is an accident I've never had a commute "add" 20-30 minutes to the commute. More like 10.

I know a lot of people where i work. Leave from home by 5:00 am to beat the traffic. At least in the morning its a nice drive.
The evening rush is a different story depending where you live.
I've had commutes before that took me 1.5 hour to get home and i only have four miles to drive! Normally that's when there is a accident on the H1 Through Aiea.

Best of luck to the OP! That's my favorite side of the island! Waimanalo, I think it is, tucked up at the foot of the mountains, lush and green - bought a car from a guy who lives there and that is just gorgeous.

off topic - I've seen some amazing ornamental metal gates over there. I wonder if there's a local artist...

You're probably not driving during rush hour.

Walkscore provides decent travel time estimates. As you can see from the attached screenshot, it's 29 additional minutes from Kailua to downtown during rush hour (29 minutes with no traffic, 58 during rush hour). This is triple your "estimate".

Unlike what you say, Kailua is very much a commuter suburb. If you work in town, you'll spend dozens of hours a month commuting.

Let's see - since the H1 Rehab project was completed, I commute 100% of the time in the evening rush via the Pali from the Airport - and it has never taken me 58 minutes from the airport (for those of you who don't live here, the Pali exit from H1 is downtown.)

If I make the light, about 1/3 of the time at Pali/Kamhameha I take the Pali in the morning rush otherwise I take H3, and it has never taken me 58 minutes to the airport.

So, I conclude walkscore is bogus/useless.

If you want a longer commute, you should try Hawaii Kai, Google maps is telling me right now (630am), 96825 to 96813 is 32 minutes vs. 96734 to 96813 is a breezy 28 minutes - although with UH finals coming up next week, there is relief for those East Hawaii commuters soon.

Yes, aren't they great? Last time there I spent many days just photographing gates, the kids would moan, "not another gate picture". Here is a nice article about some of them:

What generally are the traffic times? He can somewhat stagger his schedule.

Morning rush from Kailua at peak time is about 40 minutes (of course this depends on where in Kailua you are leaving from, I'm assuming town center) (peak being leaving about 7am) - evening rush is typically less.

On 5/6, the last full day for UH students before finals, I left my house in Kailua at 7:10 and was downtown about 7:50 with heavy traffic - today, with no students on the road, I left Kailua at 7:15 and hit School Street by 7:45

The thing one has monitor is accidents can greatly impact commute time - but there are alternate routes.

I'm so happy to see that article and the pictures. We passed one of those on the way to Bellows (we were lost). I insisted on showing my guy on the way home and could never find it again! Now I can show him! Thanks!

I do miss it. Can't wait to go back and visit.

You have got to be kidding me.

It takes 30 minutes from downtown Kailua to downtown Honolulu at 2:00 in the morning.

You're actually saying 14 miles of rush hour adds just 10 minutes of commute time? I live on Punchbowl and I can literally see the stream of cars lining all the way up to the Pali where it makes the bend before HBA inching along at a snails pace... and it goes at this snail's pace all the way into downtown. I don't know how bad the traffic is at Castle Junction or how much that adds to the commute time... but I can tell you here on the town side, it takes AT LEAST 10-15 minutes of additional travel time to get off the Pali and into the downtown corridor during the morning rush.

I'd say 45-50 minutes is the realistic average rush hour commuting time for those going into downtown Honolulu in the morning rush and back to downtown Kailua in the afternoon rush. That's 90 minutes of daily commuting or TEN full 40-hour work weeks driving and sitting in traffic every year.
