We are relocating to Oahu. My husband will be working downtown on Bishop. We have been trying to avoid traffic prone areas, and would love to purchase a property on the windward side. Is this possible? Going up and down the Pali highway this weekend was so beautiful. As we are moving from San Francisco Bay area, we are not in total price shock for property, but still....ouch. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated. Don't need to worry about schools. Children are finished with college.
What is your budget, that'll help to answer if it's possible. Windward Oahu is comparable in price to much of the Bay Area and less than SF - and property tax is substantially less.
I'd avoid the Leeward miserable traffic at all costs if you can.
A lot of people make that commute to downtown from the windward side everyday, Pali highway, LikeLike Hwy (also called Hawaii Route 63) and H3. It has its moments Regarding traffic and accidents. With the rail going in leeward its a mess out here, i for one can tell you that first hand!

We are looking between 1.5 and 2, although we have already gone over the 2. Just would prefer not to.
If that is your budget you'll have no problem finding a sizable house, remodeled, and with a pool in Kailua. You won't be oceanfront but it'll be very nice.
Will it be enough to get them a Viper and get them in the Viper Club?
I'd recommend if the op was a performance enthusiast to get a Tesla P85D which I've been driving a few months now - get solar and have the performance of a Ferrari/Viper without paying for premium gas. On our tiny island, the 250 mile range is more than you'll ever use in a single day.
As a bonus, when you need service in Hawaii they come to your house with a loaner, none of this appointment drop-off thing
Yes that is a million. And I agree about the Tesla, although after driving in Hawaii last weekend, the lower 85D might just be enough. The speed limits seem lower than on the mainland. We were also looking in Maunawili. Trying to stay close to the Pali if possible, as it is a straight shot onto Bishop.
FYI, there is a rush hour on Pali (morning and afternoon) which easily adds 20-30 mins to the traffic-free weekend commute time. If commuting/traffic is a major quality of life issue, you may want to reconsider the Windward side. If you're set on that side of the island, Maunawili is likely the best option as it's the closest Windward community to town.
