Then the real cost of the installation (min $200-$250) was buried in the cost of the air conditioner. Air conditioners at Sears are marked up higher than any other large retailer.

Lowes and Home Depot do the same thing on many products - offer installation services at below cost to sell their products. But their products are generally priced more competitively than other retailers.

Two window AC units have been replaced.

I hired a handyman using homeadvisor.com. I paid $525 for installment of AC units and bathroom medicine cabinet. It was clear that AC units installment would require some additional work. One quotation was $2,500. Finally I asked the handyman for pick-up of two AC units and a medicine cabinet, replacement/installing and disposal.

At Lowe's in Honolulu, the cost for delivery, installment and disposal was $235/unit including surcharge for +20 high floor. So $525 was very reasonable. It took a month but it was a good learning for me.

It's based on some pictures I sent. Maybe the vendor did not want to do the job.
