Who knows - 96825 (Hawaii Kai) isn't "Urban Honolulu" according to the census (and I loved the way the Advertiser spelled "cencus"), although 63% seems about right to me.

If they indeed did use all the "968's" that keeps out Kailua, Kaneohe, Kapolei, etc which would skew it up - it also leaves out Waimanalo, Waianae - which skew it down - so I think it balances out.

If they indeed did the real census CDP "urban Honolulu" again, it looks about right when you look at it on a map.

Moreover, the Pew Research Center report, "The American Middle Class Is Losing Ground," that is used as source material for the article conflates the terms "middle income" and "middle class." I suspect that a true "middle class" household in "Urban Honolulu" would be considered "upper income" in Des Moines.
Yeah thats what i was wondering, what constituted Honolulu?

Honolulu is quickly becoming a 2 class city, the haves and the have nots. Does the article mention that many house holds are multi-family, multi income just to make ends meet? Does the article mention the homeless living under every bridge in town? Does the article mention beggars and panhandlers outside of every business (seems like) begging for my hard earned dollars? Does the article mention the environmental impact of homeless population defecating on public streets / streams / beaches? Sure, you may have a middle class income on paper but due to higher cost of living here, those dollars don't go very far. Try buying a house on that middle class income in Hawaii..... You can't, if you want to eat too.

Hawaii has the smallest gap between the wealthiest and poorest in the entire 50 states.

It really doesn't mean anything if one is unable see the whole picture. Mr Whtviper1 the article really is not the major accomplishment that your trying to make it out to be. It is not like Hawaii residents are getting richer. The success of a richer Hawaii comes from outside owned corporations and international or richer money moving to Hawaii. While the poorer Oahu residents of the past are either living in multi-generational homes or moving to other islands, mainland.

Any size gap really has nothing to do with corporations...

And lots of rich people moving here would increase the gap.

HBH - when an article says the middle class growing - then that means residents in Honolulu are getting richer.

Had the article said the middle class is decreasing then you would be correct.

No what you would have is the state's highest concentrations of rich and poor divided by neighborhoods.

As housing and cost of living gets higher as history continues forward on Oahu it is only logical that those who are poorer would have to move and those who are wealthier would replace them. This is why you see the average wealth rising in Oahu thruout history. The Increasing pattern of limitted supply and higher demand on housing one will continue to see wealth averages on Oahu increase as time goes on. If for some bizarre reason the pattern would change and a boom in building available housing happens and the supply out did the demand i would suspect that the average wealth would drop alot. Right?

That makes no sense.

Honolulu has a huge well documented influx of poor immigrants.

If you are poor - you can't afford to move away. You can't just pack up a family and move to California with no money/job.

If you lived here - you would know the history making construction industry boom and record tourism are responsible for the financial windfall of the residents.
