Hello,

We will be moving to Oahu, it is a career move for my spouse. 5 year contract and we plan on never coming back!!! Moving from Houston, TX
I wanted to get the ins and outs of Hawaii....I am a bookkeeper, so we have done our research on the expenses and done budget after budget. WE get it...it is expensive...but doable....
I would like to know if they are gay friendly 1st off. We are a quiet, older married lesbian couple, not flamboyant or anything of that nature....but I wanted to know the climate towards the gays.
We lucked out and found a 2 bedroom place well within our budget in Waianae, what is this area like? Our landlord is very welcoming and excited for us. My spouses boss said we found a gem of a place.
As a bookkeeper, specializing in construction accounting, payroll and HR....I am hearing it is who you know and not what you know with regards to securing a job...is this true? My spouses income is enough to live within our means, my salary will be the back up monies. Really, how difficult will it be to secure a position?
What are things I need to know in order to be respectful and make the transition with me to Hawaii and Hawaii to me easier?? (people, customs, what to do and not do) etc.
Spouse leaves on the 15th of June...I will be following 1st of August....
I am the peace, love and be happy gal...so I feel I am going to love it.....
Any and all information is welcomed and very much appreciated.

Voters overwhelming passed the nation's first "defense of marriage" constitutional amendment in 1998 in response to a state Supreme Court decision five years earlier that nearly made Hawaii the first state to legalize gay marriage.

This should answer your question on that front. Hawaii is probably one of the most liberal if not the most liberal states.

use google maps to determine how long it'll take to get from Waianae to wherever else you might want to go on the island, including work. Double the estimate for traffic. Up to triple the estimate for really bad traffic. Where are you going to be working? Will you guys be driving to work?

people do the Waianae to town commute daily, but it's not fun. my opinion is that Waianae may be better to live if you work in Kapolei or closer or are retired.

there are a lot of construction companies on Oahu that would love to have your expertise. At a lower level white collar worker, I doubt connections would really matter (no offense intended). you're probably looking at $10-15/hour. Some of the companies are based out on the west side, so ideal if you find one of those.

You should spend the bulk of your time online researching Waianae - you may have found a gem of a place but you may not have found a gem of an area. It definitely isn't for everyone or even practically everyone - but some do love it.

Let me restate - the place is probably the least of your concerns - focus on the area the place is in,
