I have visted Oahu a few times for 3 weeks at a time. I stayed with a cousin north of the honolulu airport.

How common are IT related jobs out there? I assume, that every company needs an IT, but then I assume most are hotels which probably get contractors to do it?

Thanks,
Klesla

Check usual "Job searching spots": craigslist, careers.com, dice, ...
There is some IT jobs on Oahu, a lot more then on rest of islands, but of course a lot less then in NY, Boston or LA.
BTW: Most of IT jobs with DoD contracts, so they are required security clearance.

My husband had no trouble finding an IT job once he was here, but he had a lot of trouble getting people to take him seriously when he was searching from the mainland. He got a lot of "call us when you arrive" responses. There are some temp agencies that can help you get some income while you look for something more permanent. If you have a security clearance, you'll be a much more attractive candidate. Even the non-military jobs do a lot of military contract work, so they require security clearances for many of their jobs.

If you can get a cell phone with an 808 number, use your friend's address on your CV, and be prepared to answer late-night calls because of the time difference, it might help. But don't expect them to fly you out for an interview or pay relocation expenses. They'll think you're just looking for a "free trip to Hawaii" and are not serious about the job. Be willing & able to get yourself here without their help.
