Are the Army housing areas closed or secured? Do you have to show military i.d. etc and go through gates? Curious, b/c we are moving there in Feb. and haven't read anything on that.

Just about every one I know on Oahu requires military ID now. I know PEarl Harbor and Hickam do anyway...
Yes they all require a military ID. Most will also require a vehicle decal sticker. I believe all the bases do except for Hickam AFB. And I also believe that all the army housing is secured.
Yes, since the 9-11 tragedy; I made a trip to Hawaii, and the security measures are definately upgraded, personal property were also inspected periodically, and I do remember the dogs they had at they gate, sniffing for narcotics in personal luggage ....prior to given access..
If you are stationed at Schofield, don't let them move you to Helemano. its a military installation suburb a few mile north of schofield. IT IS NOT SECURE. Even though it a "Miitary Installation' it is privatized, unsecure, and complete ghetto. Avoid it at all costs.
This just depends on what base you are going to. If you will be living on the post and not in a separate housing area, you will be in a secured location. As for avoiding Helemano, its not as bad as it sounds. There are defiantly 'ghetto' areas on Schofield as well. If you stick it out though you have a very high chance of getting new housing which is very nice. We came in April and waited 8 weeks, now we are in a brand new housing area on the base.
The Navy-Marine Housing across the street from the Honolulu neighborhood, Aliamanu, does not have security check points. I drive thru it several times a month as short cut to my mother-in-law's house.
9.68% of our population is military statewide, according to standup4vets.com. Presumbably, that might include retirees and some definitions extend to their dependents as well.
To-Hawaii.com says that as of 2004, we had 44,496 military personnel (of whom only 32,354 were active duty), or 3.5% of the state's population. This is the only site that breaks down the Army population to 14,692, presumably also in 2004.
The Chamber of Commerce site says "Hawaii's military population totals about 40,000 active, reserve, and national guard troops, along with 18,000 civilians working for the military and more than 55,000 military family members. There are over 120,000 retired military and veterans residing in Hawaii."
Go figure.

Reason: Added discreet Army number.
