I think so many people live in the past in these two cities, and fail to see how much they HAVE changed. Cleveland and Akron are more in line with the more stable cities in the country.

I chose Dayton mainly because it is a mix of Ohio's urban nature, architecture, blandness, hickness, strip-mall layouts and high-tech future all rolled into one. And on a smaller scale, which is basically how Ohio's biggest cities stack up to other metropoli around the country.

Agree with the majority that there is no one place that best represents everything Ohio has to offer.

I would say that if you currently live in a section of Ohio you don't enjoy one could make about an hour move and find something completely different. Ohio is a state as unique as it's population. The heart of it all!

There is nothing high-tech about Dayton.

Right...

Dayton is one of the nation's premiere spots for aerospace and aviation technology and research. While other air bases layoff hundreds to thousands of workers because of defense cuts, WPAFB is adding 300 new jobs.

That kind of says something. Dayton is seen as a leader, and is able to bring in new jobs. It is also not far from Cincinnati based GE Aviation which is booming right now with orders from around the globe of planes of all sizes. Dayton is one of only two logistic centers in the country. It plays host to significant, industrial, aerospace, and technological/engineering research activity and is known for the many technical innovations and inventions developed there. You also must be forgetting that Dayton is home to the space intelligence center and air force research laboratory.

Dayton is also home to the University of Dayton which is an excellent research university and they are doing some pretty amazing things there.

Tech Town is something a lot of mid sized cities should look into:

The Greater Downtown Dayton Plan (First Cut) - YouTube

Dayton's healthcare system is another great quality to brag about. Kettering Health and Premiere Health are huge. These hospital networks, and its healthcare system has a bigger impact on the economy of the Dayton region over the airforce base. In addition, several Dayton area hospitals consistently earn top national ranking and recognition including a list of "America's Best Hospitals" as well as many of HealthGrades top ratings. The most notable hospitals are Miami Valley Hostpital and Kettering Medical Center. In 2011, the Dayton area was rated number three in the nation out of the top 50 cities in the United States by HealthGrades for excellence in healthcare. Also in 2011, Dayton was ranked the fourth best in the nation for emergency medicine care. Several key institutes and centers for health care exist in the Dayton region. The center for human tissue regeneration is a center that focuses on the science and development of human tissue regeneration. Dayton has transformed from a city based around manufacturing, to a top research city that has been ranked for quite a few years in a row now as one of the nation's best city for economic growth.

Sorry Dayton isn't a one trick pony like many other similar sized metro areas around the country.

Well after the failed auto industry, the most likely bet would be Detroit or Flint.

Do you need a security clearance to work there?

I don't know; that's a good question. We can always just ask the Michigan transplants down here what the case is.
