It's too far North for most people to consider it part of the south. Even U.S. census designated areas of the "South" are questioned by people, and rightfully so. Maryland, Delaware, D.C., Northern Virginia, parts of West Texas and South Texas. All this stuff has be discussed thoroughly, especially Texas.

Southern Ohio is too far north imo to be part of the "South"

I'm from rural Michigan, and I certainly don't hear anyone with that accent. Upper Midwestern rural areas don't have the Southern accent.

I've had this discussion in relation to Illinois, which actually goes farther south than Ohio, and Indiana. Illinois is the north; Indiana is the north; Ohio is the north. Yes, you hear some southern accents, but they're "southern light" compared to what you hear in the deep south, or even Kentucky.

I cannot hear our accents but anytime we have relatives up from Georiga they talk about how it does not sound like Ohio like they are still in the South when they are around Marietta.

I would say we were are from we have nothing in common with the folks from Michigan or even the Northern part of the state. We just did a school study on what culturally habits we have most in common with by survery in the class. Most everyone in my class was associated with Southern Upland / appalachian culture.

General method of knowing you are in a southern area: "Do they drink tea from a Mason jar?" This is a very long standing southern tradition. If yes... "Do they put ice cubes in with the tea without you having to ask even if its Winter time? If yes..."ya'll are amongst southerners."

I was in Saint Louis ion the 1990's and asked for a glass of ice tea. The waitress looked at me like I was mad. I knew St. Louis itself sided more with the North during the War for Southern independence, but this proves it. ha ha

I think there is, or was, a couple counties bordering or near Kentucky that were basically Southern. Cairo, Illinois essentially had "Jim Crow" and there was pro-Confederate activity around there during the Civil War.

Not Cincinnati, but SE Ohio may be Southern. I think WV is Southern too, but a lot of people don't consider it to be. For some reason, people here in Memphis consider St. Louis to be Southern. But I don't feel like it's Southern at all. The Lower Midwest and Upper South aren't too different, but there is noticible culture change
