I would go for the HOT! HOT! sauce , that always does the trick , they won't soon forget were it came from . And it doesn't hurt to spray it around the base of the tree either, don't worry it won't hurt the tree, but the smell will wort them off. Or, if your real daring and I'm not trying to say this to be gross, because it works to keep the deer away from known hunters hangouts and tree stands. A little Personal Pee around the tree and any other locations you want them to stay awy from. Now thats one of the best tricks there is to chase unwanted visitor away.

Oh, and the CHUPRUCOBRA iis in Puerto Rico, if you believe in it.
Not to contradict you......but every opossum I've encountered just opened it's mouth wide like it was trying hissing, but never made a sound.
Maybe they just came in contact with "Granny Clampet"

Maybe it has asthma. I'm just saying. Could be the poor possum kid that never got picked to play possum cuz he breathed too loud. Poor little possum.

All the other possums making fun of him too I bet.
