No, that pic was not a possum. This is a possum.

I was thinking the same thing. If I ever run into a possum like that, I'll probably hurt myself running away!

It is definately a bird. I heard this sound the other night and it scared me; thought a human was in the house.

I heard it again this afternoon and looked out my window and low and behold, it was a bird. I watched for a bit and everytime the heavy breathing sound I heard was when he opened his beak. I live in Houston, TX
Anyone know what kind of bird this is? It looked like an ordinary black gray bird.

Dying animals can make a strange noise too.

A raccoon getting ready to fight or one that's rabid will make a horrible sound - heavy breathing, hissing, the whole nine yards. Been treein' a few in my day, seen it all.

I am from Harare, Zimbabwe and have the same heavy breathing noise coming from our tree tops in our garden at night and also wondering what it was. In fact, the first time I heard it was around 2am in the morning and it was so load I could hear it through my intercom at my main gate. So I thought we had an intruder and proceeded go outside to knock him or them out and hand them to the cops, but when I got out there more than once, the sound had stopped. We do have an array of bird life in our garden, and a good number of owls, and was wondering if it was an owl or a night jar?

This is funny reading all these answers. I am the OP. Never thought of a bird. Haven't heard the noise since.

Ok, me again from Zimbabwe, after several days of trying to 'stake out' the heavy breather in my intercom at my gate or in my yard, finally I found out to my delight as to who the feathery culprit is. He or she is, one and a half almost two foot tall, light brown in complection with a beautiful white face with two saucer like eyes for hearing you better with and if I am not mistaken, is a Barn Owl, obviously breathing heavily to attract a mate one would think as am sure they don't suffer from asthma, although one would think they did if one heard how heavily he or she was breathing. Anyhow, good to know my yard is not infested with intruders, but a very beautiful Barn Owl.
