My son was in a martial arts program last year and I am looking for a new program. I would like to find one east of 72nd street (my ex lives in the Bluffs, so it would be an easier drive for her) but I am willing to look out west depending on the quality of the program. As I was searching, I came upon Omaha Blue Waves Martial Arts that operated out of the YMCA on 168th but just opened a stand alone location off 144th and Millard Ave. Does anyone have any experience with this program?

Any other recommendations will be greatly appreciated as well, thanks.

I went to Martial Arts America in Bellevue for a long time. I of course learned self defense, but more importantly I learned self confidence and discipline. Something I had very little of when I started. When I took classes, it was in the Southroads Mall. After I stopped the guy that ran the place (Mark Goblowsky) moved over to a location on Cornhusker Rd. and changed the name to Mark Goblowsky Martial Arts. I haven't been over there in a long time, so I'm not sure if he's still there, but he would be worth looking into.

I for a while took Hapkido out of Central High School. While it was taught by a math teacher from the school, the classes were open to the public... If you don't care WHICH martial art you're learning, that might be a good option...

Austin, TX? It is great of you to endorse their program, but unless they provide weekly round trip express flights for free, I doubt my son will be attending there.

I am going to check out Blue Waves in Millard tomorrow morning. They were very helpful and professional on the phone last night. I also plan on checking on Mark Goblowsky Martial Arts next week.

Sims Martial arts Achademy in Bellevue is amazing. Our whole family took classes there. It is a family run dojo that stresses dicipline, respect and confidence.

The classes at the Armbrust YMCA are really good, my son is taking it there. The instructors are the same at both locations, so you shouldn't have a problem if you go to either place. What we did was stop in at different schools and watched a few classes before making a decision. The other parents are a great resource. If they are happy with a school they will tell you. If they aren't happy they will tell you why they are unhappy. Parents are more honest on how good a school than the staff is .. most of the places I went I got a hard core sales pitch.
