No worries. North Omaha can look a bit imposing, but most of the streets up there won't give you any trouble. 19th & Binney, Wirt and Spencer streets have some very large charming homes. That's one of favorite neighborhoods of the city, which is called Kountze Place.

The humidity can get pretty unbearable here sometimes. But just wait for the fall and spring. You'll love it!

I would definitely exercise caution walking at night there. But that's true anywhere you walk at night.

The Omaha Amtrak station is located in south downtown, just east of 10th street. All of that is located south of the area you were thinking of.

So that's really my only experience with North Omaha. Is the train station in north O? I took to train to Omaha once, too. I remember thinking I was glad I got into Omaha during the day. I wouldn't want to be there walking around at night. At least that was my perception.
If you were walking Binney Street, near the airport, you were pretty much in the single worst part of Omaha you could find. What were you doing there? I mean, that isn't a motel area or anything...

I'm assuming that when you mention that train station, you're probably talking about the Amtrak Depot. That's actually south of dowtown Omaha, on 9th Street. That's in the Little Italy area, and though it's not great it is improving a lot.

So yes, you were in two very unappealing areas of Omaha. One in North O & one in South O. But, as you know, that's not all of Omaha.

Personally, I find the urban feel far more appealing. But that's just a matter of personal preference.

I went Omaha to visit a friend who had lived a few of his teenage years in California. His grandmother lived in CA, so his family moved out here for a few years, then returned to Omaha. That's where he lived when I went out to visit. When he picked me up at the airport he told me to be prepared, because he lived in the ghetto. It was bad were he lived. He had moved across the street from his parents while attending UNO. He said the only reason he stayed was so he could afford rent during college.

Don't worry about it. Even people who've lived here forever make that common mistake. For instance, they'll refer to anything north of Dodge St and east of 72nd street as "North Omaha" when it's actually the northeast quadrant of the city. That whole area includes many nice neighborhoods like Benson, Florence, Hillside, Gold Coast...etc.

What they're generally thinking about though, is the Near North Side which is a pretty rough part of town. That is "North Omaha" proper, which is a very small part of that northeast quadrant of town.

See this post for a little more detailed explanation.

Bosco, where is the Hillside neighborhood? I've never heard of that one before.

I forget exactly what the boundaries are, but I'm pretty sure it's right up by Gifford Park.

Cool, thanks! I'll have to drive up there sometime. I'm always looking for a new neighborhood to explore

There is no way to judge an "area" of any city. You really have to narrow it down to a street-by-street search. And you often won't know what kind of neighborhood you're looking at until you already live there.

I own a rental house in the Florence area (near McMillan Junior High). It's a great area, with kids running around & playing, friendly neighbors who spend time on their front porches, and a really nice public swimming pool nearby (High Point Pool). Beautiful mature trees. The houses were all built in the late 50s to early 60s, and run in value from about $75,000 - $125,000.

Ironically, it's an area of Omaha most people would absolutely refuse to consider. And I'm not sure why.

FYI, I grew up in north Omaha; the Florence area (near McMillan Junior High), and swam at High Point pool as a kid. Things were not safe back then (the 80's), and they have become much worse. 70% of all violent crime happens in northeast Omaha (east of 60th street and north of Dodge). There's even a north Omaha "warning" on virtualtourist.com. Those people on their porches are not the "frendly" sort. Those children in the streets are likely there because they are NEVER supervised. I know there are exceptions to everything, but this is the norm. Wikipedia north Omaha, and you will find more information. Also, here is the 2009 Homicide map, and you can see for yourself in living color.

I know this doesn't help the north Omaha area... just wanted to give you fair warning. I was raised there, but would never take (let alone raise) my children there.
