Actually, they are. That's when most grocery stores do their stocking. Any major 24 hour store will probably have at LEAST a dozen cars parked overnight.

True, but at least it's presumed that the owners of the cars are somewhere inside the store. When a car is left at a train station overnight, it's presumed that the owner is in another city somewhere.

Irvine train station allows vehicles to left overnight. Go on any given night and you will see probably 70 vehicles left at the station (mainly Flyaway and Amtrak passenger cars). This is because Irvine is:
1.) A Flyaway Bus Terminal: Vehicles may be left overnight because this a station for the Flyaway Bus to LAX. This allows passengers on the bus to leave their car for free at Irvine station, pay the fare to board the bus, and travel nonstop to LAX for their flights.

2.) Irvine is also an Amtrak station: Stations where Metrolink and Amtrak share the station allow overnight parking usually, such as at Irvine. Amtrak passengers frequently are going on vacations or trips rather than doing their daily commute so will leave their car at the station while they spend a few days or even weeks in San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, etc... that are along the Pacific Surfliner route. It would be very impractical for Amtrak to say you can't park at Irvine station while you go on your trip.
