I am thinking about getting a college degree in game programming or game art. What school should I go to if I want to get hired by one of the video gaming companies in Orange County? Is the Art Institute a reputable school in the eyes of the best gaming companies? How about the junior colleges? Are they considered competitive when it comes to hiring candidates?

Get an interview with these schools and ask them about that, would be my suggestion. Are you looking at Blizzard? Blizzard seems to tour a lot of schools in O.C., so if it's pertaining to Blizzard -- I don't think it would matter as I think that they would think that what your portfolio looks like would matter most.

Based on my knowledge pretty much all of the locals work that way anyways(Blizzard, Activision, Sony Online Entertainment, SCE San Diego/Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Ready At Dawn, etc). Other than internship programs that are tied to certain colleges, the bulk of the industry is portfolio based because the industry was largely started(and still somewhat populated by) the self-educated and/or entrepreneurs. It's about what can you do, not the piece of paper.

Well if your concerns are with being associated with schools, I hear a high turnover with other schools not in O.C., Art Center and CalArts both in L.A. county -- very expensive.
