I'm a truck driver and horseshoer gettin ready to retire in a few years.
[soon as i get a million in cash stashed away].
Anyway, I was trying to decide where i want to spend the last 30 or so years of my life.
I asked a friend from cali. who's been livin in utah for the past 20 years where he would like to retire to when he quits layin tile. He said without hesitation- LAGUNA BEACH CALIFORNIA.

I've been to LA and lots of other cali cities for a day or so at a time, but never Laguna Beach. I looove cali !!!!!

My plan is to retire and buy a few acres and rescue a few ponies, then run a horsemanship and trailriding operation. Teach people how to handle horses and how to ride and feed and shoe horses. Maybe transform a suitable building into a horse boarding stable as well.

Even though i'm 50ish, I still love to admire beautiful young women and sit on the beach and just "be" there. I love healthy 30ish kinds of gals.

Does anyone have any strong opinions on laguna beach?
What makes it different from any other beach city?
Wonder if i'd like to retire there?
I guess i'll have to make the trip to see it first hand, but can anyone speak on it for me.

EDUCATE ME ON LAGUNA BEACH. ONLY IF YOU KNOW.

I WAS LEANING TOWARD RETIRING IN Oregan or Maine.

what say y'alll?

I don't see how Laguna Beach fits in with your plan to acquire a few acres for horses. You could do that in the Inland Empire but that's 50+ miles and a world away from Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach is a very small, somewhat isolated part of Orange County reserved for the wealthy. You're going to need a lot more than a million bucks to live there unless you want to rent a tiny apartment.

You will definately struggle at finding any land for horses in Laguna Beach. I don't even know of one personal residence that even has enough land for horses in the Laguna area. Expanding beyond Laguna, I honestly don't think you will find anywhere to raise horses along the coastline....from Malibu to Imperial Beach and everywhere in between.

Oregon or central California may be a better fit for you. San Luis Obispo, and some of those other small beach towns in central California will give you more land and beach-access.

How far away is the closest thoroughbred racetrack?
I'm thinking maybe I'll shoe some horses part time and make some connections and make it work somehow.

Del Mar is probably 60 miles south toward San Diego, and Santa Anita is probably 50 NE toward LA County.

There is NO acreage available in Laguna Beach....the closet area where horses are kept is Nellie Gail in Laguna Hills...about eight miles inland from the beach, but you will need much much more than a million in retirement funds to set up in that area.

I'm afraid to tell you, but your dream of acreage and horses might be much more realistic in Nevada or Arizona.

I am an artist trying to get my start in Laguna Beach, and I was wondering if anyone knew of some cities further inland that is more affordable so I can commute. I am tight on money, no more than 300k, and need a med. to large yard for my dogs.

For large yard at $300k, you're probably looking at Corona or beyond. You could probably get a condo in Lake Forest for that.

Montana Farrier - Laguna Beach is not zoned for horses. There used to be horses up on the bluff in what is now Newport Coast. The stables were a major checkpoint for small planes landing at John Wayne. However, those stables made way for McMansions.

You are better off shoeing the private horses. A good farrier makes a decent living, and the really good specialists fly in, spend a week or two here and then fly home; keeping a rig here.

Horse areas can be found in San Juan Capistrano (mostly public boarding barns until you go back up Ortega Hwy.), Lake Forest (boarding barn), OC Fairgrounds (trying to throw them out of there), Huntington Beach (another public boarding barn) and then back in Silverado and Trabuco Canyons - where you might get the land, but it will be far pricier than Montana and very prone to fire. Lots of horse property down in San Diego County - very pretty in the Bonsall area and back into Valley Center. Less expensive as you get near the border and up in the mountains in the Alpine area. My own farriers live in Temecula (lots of horses there - and he used to live in Lake Forest) and in Ojai - up towards Santa Barbara. He comes down and spends the week shoeing Saddlebreds and Friesians in the Temecula area and then goes back up to Ojai. He makes good money for a shoer - $270 for a reset and $400 for a new custom set with pads. And yes, the hunter/jumper folks pay the same as well.

FYI, I am currently in the process of selling my former fiancee's home in Laguna (he passed away, and I'm executor). The home has a terrific view, but it is about 1300 square feet on a 25x100 foot lot (with jacuzzi). 3bdr, 2ba, 2 car garage - and even in today's economy, the comps in the area - with not as good a view as his house are $1.2 million. You might be able to fit a mini in the jacuzzi

I can't believe how many posts I read from people that so immensely constrain their housing options simply because they have dogs. (I think they are Number 3 on City Data behind 1) People wanting to move from England and 2) people wanting to become a movie star.)

Instead of a realistic
"Budget of $300K, single, my job is near the coast, looking for a condo near fun, vibrant neighborhood with shopping, social activities, clubs, etc"
the inquiry is essentially limited to
"Budget of $300K, single, my job is near the coast,... and because I have a dog, looking for a SFR with a yard (fifty miles from my job...in dull suburbia, full of families and amenities I don't need and will not use for ten years....)"
