My partner and I are moving to Coos Bay in November from San Diego. We're not expecting to find a gay social scene, and we're not really looking for one. But I am curious as to whether we're likely to encounter much anti-gay hostility. We're basically getting out of the rat-race and looking forward to life at a slower and more uncrowded pace. We've purchased a beautiful home and don't have any illusions about the weather, etc., since I've been to Coos Bay a number of times in all seasons. But I haven't spent enough time there to really get a handle on whether we'll encounter prejudice against us as a gay couple. Any thoughts?

I live just north of Coos Bay. Most people won't care if you are gay or not from the little I've noticed. There are a few naive people here who might be surprised if you were to tell them you were gay.

We are not the big city so some folks are not very sophisticated. However we have a mix of people from different locations and backgrounds.

Good luck with your new home.

Like WaterLily, Im in the area, although Im right on the bay here in Coos Bay, and Im agreeing with her. I havent noticed any anti-gay stuff going on, or really heard any comments. Obviously you'll get some butthead that will go out of their way to be rude to you, no matter what you live like, or where you live at, but for the most part, I doubt you'll have much grief here. Just holding to my general plea, come here, be friendly/polite, and a relatively happy Oregonian, not complaining about Oregon or Oregonians or comparing us negativly to your previous home and Im sure you'll make lots of friends and enjoy living here. Welcome to the Oregon Bay Area!!

Most of Oregon is not Gay friendly. Most of the world is not Gay friendly. Unless your definition of gay means happy.

I've said this a number of times before, but there is an Oregon Mason-Dixon Line that runs along the southern border of Lane County. If you want to be among well-educated, open-minded and acculturated people, you'll do better by staying to the north of it. Coos County is an assertively Red county. I would maintain a don't-ask-don't-tell posture when among the general public.

Not just coos, but Josephine, Douglas, Jackson, Klamath. Soon the whole state will be red.

If what is up north is educated then it stopped at elementary school.

You're correct on this one. Even here in Scranton, with a metro population of over 600,000, there has been quite a bit of anti-gay sentiment over the years, and it's a bloody shame. Not all gays are child molestors, feminine, and spread AIDS through handshakes! I wouldn't exactly go so far as to equate "well-educated" with "open-minded" though as some others have; I've met plenty of narrow-minded P.h.D. holders here in Scranton, and I've also met very tolerant high school dropouts. You can't judge someone's social characteristics solely on their maximum educational attainment.

We're not all "out to get you!" If you were sitting next to me at a hockey game, you'd have no idea I was gay! We bleed the same color blood (all too frequently with the hate-crime violence that runs rampant in our nation), drive on the same highways, work at the same office buildings and factories, eat at the same diners, and talk on the same cell phones. Why then do so many consider us to be "beneath" them as human beings? This same nonsense occurred in the 1960s to with the Civil Rights Movement and Conservatives terrorizing Dr. King for his great deeds, including one Conservative idiot who brazenly took his life! Now there is a new "Civil Rights Movement", and history is repeating itself.

Being a Coos County native, I would have to agree with this statement. And what you see on the surface around here, can be a whole different thing just below the surface. People in this area are tolerant on a thinly veneered outside..but not so much in groups. It's ignorant and sad, but true. The influx of people coming from other areas that are more open minded is helping change that tone, but it's a long way from being a "friendly" place.
There is a small minority of gay & lesbians here, but they are quiet about it. Very quiet....

I would say that you'll be accepted as long as you're not flamboyant. Does that make someone a bigot? Not necessarily. Remember, that just like you, others have the freedom to their own sexual mores. As a native Oregonian, you will be accepted by your general attitude. If, as expressed above, you are polite, people will be fine with you. If you walk around like a gay activist, then don't expect people to welcome you with open arms. Just like a fundamentalist Christian shouldn't expect to be accepted if he's quoting Scripture in a liberal area. If you try to force yourself or your beliefs on others, you will be met with resistance.

If you are looking to live on the coast, you can find many other areas where the people will be more open minded and accepting. Coos Bay is very conservative. Don't expect to make many friends here if you are liberal minded in any way. It is extremely difficult for me being an environmentally minded democrat with a college education. I've been here 5 years now and I'm looking to move out of here. I moved here because of the cheap real estate at the time. I didn't take into consideration the general attitudes of people here and now I wish I had. I left Salt Lake City to get away from the conservative religious mind set and just assumed anywhere in Oregon would be better. The people in Coos Bay are very friendly and nice, but they are not open minded.
