Animals Along I-5 (Corvallis, Pendleton: university, kitchens, winter)

We recently drove I-5 north to south and saw some animals that we'd like to know more about. I've learned that the folks who hang around CD are great sources of local info.

Around Exit 15 we saw some cows marked like Hampshire Hogs, black with a white band. I've done a little research and found breeds like Dutch Branded, American Branded and Panda. Can you tell me what those were that we saw in Oregon?

All along the road, but primarily around Corvallis, we saw a lot of sheep. Some of them looked like they might be miniatures. Is that something to do with the university? (I went to Oklahoma State, the other OSU with Halloween colors). Or maybe Pendleton?

There are some cattle near Dixon Montana that are black with one large white band around the middle.
Many folks that I know have mentioned the breed and are curious. They are very interesting looking cattle.

They're called Oreo cows.

If this is what you saw, it's called the Belted Galloway

We call them "lambs." They're quite common at this time of the year, but for some reason they tend to disappear toward winter.

Yes that's the breed of cow we saw. Thanks. Hmmm. I see that I typed Branded instead of Banded in my original post. Seems like they're called both Banded and Belted.

Re the sheep. OK, so they were a lot of lambs then. There were so many and they were grouped together, instead of being with individual ewes, so that's why I thought they might be miniatures. Well, yes, I wonder where they go. Perhaps to kitchens like the one that prepared my lovely lamb chops at Easter brunch. Thanks.

Actually, there is a "miniature" breed of sheep called Shetland Sheep, I guess that's why there are Shetland Sheep Dogs. I saw them (the Shetland Sheep) at the state fair a few years ago and they are definitely smaller than the standard sheep.

They are a hornless breed from Scotland and I believe that they are somehow related to the Angus also from Scotland and naturally hornless. Take a good look at the head, (From the photo posted) and think "Angus". Their meat is supposed to be very good.
