We're looking to move at some point in the next year or two. My husband will most likely be commuting from Orlando International (MCO) so he needs access to the airport. Our kids are ages 8 & 10 and we're moving from overseas. We will rent to start with but we want to find a location that is safe, has great schools and a 10-30 min drive to MCO.

We've been looking at Northern Virginia but we aren't sure about cost of living - it seems very high there. So, we're also interested in Orlando. My husband is from the Midwest (IN), I'm from Australia, the kids are both US born but we moved overseas for work in 2005. Before that we had lived in Texas, North West Indiana and South Florida. I've been reading some good things about the schools in Seminole and Orange Counties - which areas would be better for access to MCO?

Any help would be appreciated. We're coming for a visit next week so will try and get a feel for both NOVA and Orlando.

Your housing/rental budget will be important in determining where you can find the best areas. Any idea what that will be?

If proximity to MCO is what you are most worried about then vista lake could be a really good option. With that budget you could find a nice house from 1200-1800 a month with decent schools, Also it is about 5 minutes from the airport. There is the the curry ford area pretty much in the same ballpark just a bit further from the airport. You could look into the Avalon park All of the schools there are highly rated i do not know much about the neighborhoods though even though they look like really nice homes/ communities. Then there is Oviedo in Seminole county winch has superior schools and really nice little to no crime neighborhoods, but the trade-off is a 25-30 minute drive.

I forgot to also mention the obvious choice lake Nona it is a little out there very close to the airport right behind it to be exact. It is also not as established as the other communities are that i mentioned previously. The schools out there are on par with Oviedo, and Avalon Park

Schools are definitely a priority and 25-30min doesn't sound so bad. How is It living in Oviedo?

I would recommend Dr. Phillps- very safe, 20 or so minutes to the airport, tons of great dining, shopping and entertainment, has great schools and some beautiful neighborhoods. You won't have a problem finding a place within your budget.

How do Oviedo, Dr Phillips & Avalon Park compare to each other? Are some areas newer? Are the school standards about the same?

My first recommendation would be Dr. Phillips because it has great schools, very safe, a pleasant atmosphere, and offers restaurants, shopping, theme parks etc. The location is very central to most things. It's about a 20 minute drive to MCO. If you want to live closer to MCO, than I would recommend Lake Nona.

agreed. Would do Lake Nona or Dr Phillips over any other of the suggested areas based on safety, amenities and quality of the schools.
