We are currently in Alamonte Springs Florida near Winterpark and want to go to a beach with a boardwalk that is less than an hour. Any suggestions.

If you are thinking NJ boardwalk type beaches, it really isn't going to happen here.....maybe Daytona Beach is the closest you will get. There are rides, games, shops, and food. Cocoa Beach has a pier with shops and food etc.

If you're not looking for a NJ Boardwalk-style beach and something less commercial/more aesthetically appealing, check out Flagler Beach. It's just at an hour's drive and is nearly a 180 degree difference from Daytona Beach. It's a nice, uncrowded beach minus cars like Daytona or New Smyrna and has a little downtown area with ships/restaurants as well as the pier and boardwalk. http://www.scenica1a.org/flagler-beach-pier.html

I was not happy when we went to Cocoa,, we did didn't even stay 15 min. Coming from Miami beach/ and Clearwater-and even Jax beaches-- it was like what happened? I guess the money coming in from tourist s going to?? definitely not beautification and expansion of the beaches.

The question is ......what beach did you go to? 15 minutes doesn't even give you time to explore. Lots of beaches and none the same, really. Lori Wilson has a Nature walk that is beautiful in addition to the beach. Did you get in the wateer maybe rent some boogey boards for the kids to enjoy themselves? Here we keep our beaches as Natural as we can since we are one of the only county's some sea turtles come into to lay their eggs.

What exactly do you think the tourist/tax money should be used for to improve the beaches. They are all public. Condos, private homes, clubs, or hotels cannot kick people off the beach behind their land. All county beaches have free parking lots(city beaches may charge). All county beaches have bathrooms. There are pavilions and picnic tables at most. Some have grills. Some have food stands. We don't have a lot of boardwalks anymore since most were destroyed by hurricanes since I have lived here, so it was wasting money to rebuild back to what we had. Last year we did not even get hit by a hurricane but we lost all beach access for a while. We spend $$$$ a year to put sand back on the beaches because of the wave erosion.

I know all of the above being from Miami beach, I think we prob have Chinese sand by now, but what we saw was old condos or buildings after building - older style area very similar to Daytona, I have NOT been there for 30 yrs and probably looks the same. I know bout the turtle eggs from the GULF side, so nothing new, but the area around the beaches is what we found depressing. Clearwater and Dade-Broward beaches have improved their surroundings- lots of places to eat and walk and except for a few hotels they are newer looking. I expect that tourist money would be re-invested in their locale and tax money on sidewalks streets, parks etc,
Anyhow, we decided if we want beach- we'll drive to the Tampa side. Maybe I expected something else.

Daytona has a nice boardwalk and the east coast beaches are preferable to Gulf side anyday.

I agree and most seem to prefer the Gulf side beaches. Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Beach and Honeymoon Island to name a few have been best beach in the past (can't repeat) as well.

Of course it's a matter of preference at heart, but there are some drastic differences about the east coast beaches that the west coast just can't match.

While places like Siesta Key, Anna Marie Isle, St. Pete Beach, are gorgeous, the east coast has better waves, cooler more refreshing water than the bathtub that is the gulf, more excitement, beach driving which is awesome, and sunrises vs sunsets over the water.
