This might be a dumb question but I got into an argument with my father over this on whether Orlando is considered a major city or not. He claims that Orlando is too small compared to many other cities in America and is not a major city, inspite of us being so well known for our "wonderful theme parks" sarcasm intended. He also claims Orlando is going to shrink because he said "there have always been more people leaving then coming in" and that they are going to live in "real cities" He also cited my plans to move out of state later this year as "finally having the good sense to leave this sorry excuse for a city" but then complained that las vegas is another "faux big city just like orlando" He doesnt consider tourists towns to be real cities

I think Orlando is a major city. Just over 2 million people living here in all 4 counties, there are more people leaving then coming currently but overall a lot of people are still coming here so the percentage of people leaving is very small. We still have a lot of good things going for us as well and I think when the economy picks up Orlando is going to kick off its rapid growth again

BTW you can tell my dad really hates Orlando.

Just this does not make it a major city.

Orlando is on its way to, but today, it is at best small in the major city scale.

if it means anything, its around the 19th tv market in the US (Orlando/Melbourne) from this past September and Miami/Ft Lauderdale is #17...
A TV Market is a pretty good indication in my opinion. Obviously if you are comparing to NY,LA,CHI type places...no , its not and never will be, but a city the size of Orlando has advantages and disadvantages. Coming from living in NYC for 4 years.. I like the change of pace feel.

I consider it to be a small major city. Theres no way i would consider it a town, it has big city amenities, commuter rail is on its way, its diversifying it economy more and more everyday. It has over 2 million people in the area. It has a nice downtown along with nice downtown neighborhoods. It attracts about 48 million visitors per year, its the second largest convention city in the US.

I would say it's a major city in the southeast; only Atlanta and Miami are bigger. I might be wrong but I believe it is easily the most visited out of all of them (if only for WDW)

I know one thing; It's bigger than anything we've got in SC

Before I get jumped on.......I was wrong, Orlando Ain't even in the top ten. #6 metropolitan area. I can't beleive Charlotte has more people than Atlanta

How does it make sense for DC to be in that list? LOL

I'd say at the least, Orlando should be #5 and then Charlotte has more cause of the banking industry...
Also, I think everyone is talking as a "metropolitan" area, so I think the more fair comparison is the metropolitan list

I would say that Orlando is more of a mid size city than a major city. A major city would be a city like Miami.

Well, some people would consider Charleston, SC a major city, and it is smaller than Orlando.
