A 40 year old X1/9 is not a modern Fiat. However, in the US the cheap fuel prices are killing the 500 series. The product line is also old and really due for a refresh.
From the ratings that I have seen, Fiat has not fixed their reliability issues. They are at or near the bottom of most such lists.
Wife recently purchased a 2016 Fiat 500 EZ with 20,000 miles on it. It was an ex-lease vehicle. She really enjoys it. She drives back and forth to work with it and it has been reliable so far with fair gas mileage. Took it on an extended trip once, no problems. Had my son and his wife in it recently and everyone fit fine (of course we are not big people, the tallest of us is 5'9" and heaviest 185 ibs.). Have not had any complaints, it seems to be good in the snow, but judging from the comments here will probably invest in the extended warranty.
I wrote a loan for one today, a 2015 model with 5k miles. Sold for $11,700, sticker was $19,250. Single girl in her twenties. She even opted for the manual.
I'd have the Abarth in a minute....except I need a back seat for a 4 month old, and I already have a Fiesta ST.
Well, took me 5 years instead of a minute, but I have a 500 Abarth Cabrio now. A '13 model for $8k. I immediately replaced the engine/transmission mounts, and it drives and shifts so much smoother already. Can't wait for spring! The Fiesta ST I had was killing my back, so I got rid of it years ago. The 500 has a much more upright seating position. No issues on my 50 minute each-way commute.
