https://electrek.co/2023/07/21/rivia...-configurator/

Rivian has launched its two-motor (as opposed to quad-motor) options bringing the base price for the R1T to 73K and the base price for the R1S to 78K both of which are under the 80K SUV/pickup truck price limit for the federal tax credit which means they are effectively 20% cheaper than the previous base prices for each.

Apparently the max pack (largest battery pack) option for the dual motor vehicle is headed for 410 miles EPA range rating.

Offering a two-motor option makes a lot of sense - it's not as sophisticated in terms of degrees of freedom in the drivetrain relative to having 4 independent motors, but, it will lower the cost on an expensive vehicle and might improve reliability as well.

Yep, that independent movement allowed by a motor for each wheel can do some really interesting tricks and is apparently amazing for a wide variety of off-roading conditions, but the honest truth is that a good chunk of people who buy these or their closest ICE Land Rover / Range Rover equivalents probably aren't really doing extremely rugged off-roading all that often or perhaps ever. In that sense, the cheaper trim with higher range and still a good deal of off-roading prowess makes more sense.

Summer 2024 is supposedly going to have some downtime for the R1T and R1S production lines where they'll put in place some production improvements like streamlining the number of electronic parts and wiring harness needed. It's also supposedly when they'll work on a LFP battery version which will likely be the new base trim version. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/r...24-220809.html
