Hi, kids! Scroll on down and check out Today's Tip.

PLAN AHEAD FOR 2013 TAX PREPARATION

I received an email message today from the online service that I use to file my tax returns and it contained some great tips. From that article, here's a list of documents you should keep, and keep organized, throughout the year.
  • First, be sure to retain your tax documents for at least 3 years after your tax returns are filed.
  • File away credit card statements, receipts and canceled checks (imaged or paper) as proof of payment for deductible items.
  • Keep records concerning real estate taxes and other taxes paid by you thoughout the year, including auto excise tax.
  • If you've bought or sold real property, keep those records, or copies of them, in your tax files for reference.
  • Keep records concerning any home improvements.
  • In addition to the W-4 you will receive at the end of the year if you've been employed, save documentation concerning other taxable income such as unemployment benefits.
  • Save records concerning investment transactions.
  • If you are able to deduct travel expenses, save mileage logs, gas receipts and other travel receipts.
  • If you have substantial medical bills and may be able to count them as a deduction, be sure to save those receipts.
  • If you've purchased energy-saving appliances, file away those receipts as well, because you may be able to deduct the cost of those items.
If you keep all of these records together and organized throughout the year, it will make tax return preparation a lot less painful next spring.

Thanks for the tip Pam, however I don't need it. I've been hearing from others that sometime in Dec 2012 the world will end as we know it. There's no one going to be around to collect any tax. It's the first time I'll be able to get out of paying any tax into the government. If you can run for president and not pay your fair share of taxes then I can at least have one year of not paying any.

Mrs J is the Tax Return Queen!

She's done it both here and in the US.

Due to the horrible events last year she filed late and got sent a penalty charge, but in their review of her return actually ended up refunding her even more!

Death and taxes- the only certainties in life!

Great tips Pam.

A lot less painful? Mind your audience, Pam! You'd get more responses to your Tips of the Day, if you concluded your posts, with: And now, for the pain-loving masochists out there! And you may get some nice reps out of that extra consideration!

Any time I plan for something more than a week ahead, this voice invariably appears: You could be dead/disabled tomorrow! Still working in a LTC/Rehab facility at 62, I know where that voice comes from!
