It's pretty rare that my girlfriend and I pull out our phones when we're eating. The only reason we do it is if we're coordinating plans with others for later. I remember we went to a brewery/restaurant a while ago and saw this couple that literally was glued to their phones their entire meal. They never said a word to each other or even looked at each other. They were probably in their late 40's. As soon as they left and were out of ear shot I turned to my girlfriend and said "let's never EVER do that." She agreed whole-heartedly.
Man, I hate to admit, but I can be one of those people if there are deadlines and the like. I have to physically restrain myself from whipping out my phone in a restaurant or a movie theater to check e-mails. It's a character flaw and I fully admit it.
It baffles me when I see a table of six people all on their smartphones for an extended period of time. It makes me wonder why they bothered to get together in the first place.
Maybe they're all texting each other at the table rather than talking? Oh, THAT would be insane!

I couldn't agree more. I see it as rude and disrespectful to the person or people you are having a meal with. Don't get me started on the people talking on their phones at a restaurant, ugh. I put my phone away for meal times so I may enjoy real conversations.
I will get up and leave if the person I'm with can't put their phone away. This happened to me on a date, so I excused myself and sat at the bar. It's sad that people need incentive to be polite.
I agree too. I cannot stand it when its done to me and I don't do it my friend/date/whatever. However, if we're looking for movie times, etc then that's different but Im not "out" with my phone..

I agree.
This whole "I'm naked without my phone" mentality is truly an illness.
You know, where I live, and in many parts of the U.S., smoking is no longer permitted inside public buildings. So I think that people should take their phone calls outside the same way they do their smokes.
My gym doesn't allow cell phone calls. If someone's cell rings, they either turn off the ringer and let it go to voice mail, or they head to the lobby and take their call there, which is okay.
What I would like to see if a "Turn off your phone and internet for a whole day day".
