Whenever possible, I'd prefer giving people a personal thank you by telling them in person, rather than writing it down on a piece of paper, so if they were my neighbors, I'd walk over there and tell them thank you.

I agree with you, I saw my neighbors at church and thanked them for our christmas gifts.
