I remember growing up in neighborhoods where people actually took care of their yards. Every single yard was clean and had a green lawn from one property line to the next. If the grass ever got over 4 inches long, the city code enforcement people would be knocking on your door to get the lawn mowed.

Today looking at those same neighborhoods 90% of the yards have little grass and are filled with every type of imaginable trash. Vehicles, boats, RVs are parked on what used to be the front lawns.

In one case I just read that the city has given up trying to prevent people from parking on the parkways between the sidewalk and the street and has started letting residents buy permits to pave that green space over and use it for parking. In a news video I saw residents complaining that they shouldn't have to pay for a permit to park in front of their own homes. To which a city councilman responded, "You realize that is not your property, it's city property right?

Times sure have changed, and not for the better. Today people could care less about keeping up their property.

Here is George Burns Smoking cigars on the Tonight Show in 1989. I believe Johnny Carson was still smoking at that time too. Though he mostly did it off camera. But sometimes the camera would catch him.

You dress nice in a pretty dress with a full slip even on hot days to leave the house for even a small quick errand, no casual clothes ever. In the front yard/garden girls were not allowed to wear shorts.

I remember when all you had to say about your wristwatch to let people know it was "high end" was to say it was a "Swiss watch". The brand name didn't matter.
