........I can vividly remember laying on the Living room floor in front of the PHILCO Radio (the one with the green Cat's Eye for fine tuning), and listening to (4 or 5) 15 minute long radio shows that came on one right after the other (every day) on WMAQ in northern Illinois............shows such as: Jack Armstrong; Terry and the Pirates; Capitan Midnight; Little Orphan Annie; Yukon King and I think The Lone Ranger was also in that time slot from about 4:30pm to 6 PM. And my sister used to listen to a radio show called :..."Our Gal Sunday".
I have a friend who still has his "Decoder Ring"
....I think I remember getting one by sending in three box tops from the WHEATIES boxes.
I also remember being at the kitchen table (on Sunday morning) eating breakfast and hearing FDR announce (on that same PHILCO Radio) the bombing of Pearl Harbor and stating a Declaration of War with Japan.
Also the famed radio announcer: Gabriel Heater was on once a day with World news.
Edit: Something else that I remember from those days of long ago...............................
October 9, 1942 (the date Roger Touhy escaped from Statesville Prison (just outside of Chicago)..........
I was 10 years old and was in the family car (a 1939 Buick 4 door sedan) being driven by my Dad (I was asleep on the back seat--it was around 8 pm and dark out). We were just entering the suburban community of Wheeling, Illinois (about 15/20 miles north of Chicago) when all of a sudden (4) State Police Crusiers cut us off and surrunded our car with their guns drawn..............they thought it was Roger Touhy!!!!!!!!!!!
My Dad immediately reached up and flippped on the dome light in the ceiling of the car and put his hands on the steering wheel and yelled that his son was asleep in the back seat and he WAS NOT Touhy. The situation was quickly cleared up and we were on our way home!!.......... I sure had quite a story to tell in my 4th grade class in my next school day.
