I saw hydraulic tubes in a very few places. I do remember that the St. Louis Public Library used them, at least in my memory. And in a old department store in TX, I saw them used. I don't know when they began to be in use, or when they fell out of use. Interesting memory.
I remember those hydraulic tubes, too. Also the telephone switchboards that were manually operated. I was fascinated by them.
Watched a standup comedian recently where he was talking about getting the wind knocked out of you as a kid. Like how, now, as an adult, if you got the wind knocked out of you, you'd probably call the ER. But as kids, it probably happened, on average, about four times a week. lol You feel like you're going to die, but wait a few minutes, oh, you're fine.

I'm SO Old I Remember: (this is fun in a depressing way):
The milkman at the back door
Lawnmowers with no motor
Not knowing anyone with air conditioning
Not having a tv remote
Public phone booths with intact phonebooks hanging from a chain
Mom washing socks on a scrub board in a sink
Always having sheets dry by hanging them on a clothesline out back
The bread man at the door who also sold amazing chocolate cakes
Ironing my dad's handkerchiefs while listening to the radio (The Shadow)
Useless novocaine at the dentist (that was fun)
Three kids with one bathroom upstairs
Riding the bus for fifteen cents
Five cent candy bars , one cent bubblegum
Wearing dresses while riding my bike
Bubblelights on the Christmas tree and tinsel
The family doctor coming to the house and maybe giving me a shot
Having chicken pox, measles and whooping cough
Eating Wheaties for breakfast while my parents slept
The ice cream truck and it's bell you could hear approaching and racing indoors to beg for a nickel for an orange popsicle
Putting cold, wet socks on the classroom radiator to dry in winter
Feeling happy and care-free
Born in 1931 went thru the 30's. Life was simple for me not having toys as those decades later on. A person with imagination can do wonders with a clothespin and a turned over wheelbarrow.
The 40's was okay as everyone pitched in to help.
What to miss can bring many different answers depending on what part of the country they lived in or family financial situations.
I do miss the large family get togethers with the Unchle/Aunt weddings and later on baby christenings of my younger cousins.
I was the first grandchild from 9 Uncles/Aunts on my dads side....many parties.
Best invention for me...nothing stupendous.
My best advice is to bear in mind that you are here one time only so make the best of it. Do what makes you fulfilled in life with finished goals.
Nothing better then knowing you accomplished your dreams.

Better or worse? Hard to say. The Depression and WWII years weren't easy but as a country we knew who we were and were pretty much "one nation". Today there is so much internal dissension I wonder if we will ever be "one nation" again.
when writing checks at a store was common place. when credit cards came around i couldn't believe it was a valid transaction
having to remember telephone numbers ( something along 20 different numbers) not using area codes to make a call.
there was a number to call for the official time, and a telephone number that called the whether report
no such thing as a plastic tonka
...
size18 jogged a memory of having socks and bread bags put on my hands to play in the snow for a little while and no one called cps on my " bad parents"
