When most all boys and a lot of girls had a pocketknife as a tool on them at school and it was never a problem.

We didn't but my mother sat in the same desks and did use a pen for some school work. I actually had two of her teachers.

My husband got polio at 4 yrs old and spent some time in an iron lung. I got the vaccine a year after while in kindergarten. He still limps but can walk. We are 71 yrs old now.

I remember sitting in a desk and chair like that with the hole for an ink well. We never had ink wells, though.

Polio scared us all to death. I am 72. I am happy your husband esccaped with relatively minor effects. Polio is a scourge.
