I have one son who was "the neat freak" and would actually pick up the living room. Wash the dishes left in the sink. He liked things neat and tidy even as a teenager.

One year when he went back to school, I came home and the house was a mess. I was honestly worried about him for a couple of seconds because I couldn't imagine that he hadn't tidied up. Then I remembered they were back in school. Wow! Did I miss him! Lol. I tease him about that to this day. (When he's straightening up the pile of magazines.)

Edit:

Someone just asked me about OCD. No. Wasn't off the charts with any obsession. Just a tidy guy. And he loved his mom enough to want to help out. Wow! What a concept!

While I like being able to get back into a more predictable routine I do miss the kids when they go back to school. It seems we have precious little time with them during the school year...they get busier as they get older. One is in SG and preparing to go on a student exchange trip, the other is in AP courses that require some after school time and a club/team that will keep him after school nearly every day for a while, etc.

One benefit of the kids being busy is that DH and I get a lot more time together alone. I meet him for lunch at least once a week. We take walks and sit on the front porch watching hummingbirds (OK, I like the birds, he just sits with me, lol), we're working on projects around the house. I know some couples go through a 'growing apart' as the kids get older but we love spending the time together. Sometimes we really miss the time we don't have with the kids, sometimes we look forward to them leaving so we can start the rest of our lives, lol.

That sounds tremendously healthy! For too many couples, all they've had binding them together is the kids. The fact that you are now enjoying spending time together is a GOOD thing.

My oldest went to middle school this year, and it struck as the next goodbye in a long series of goodbyes. She's more than halfway to striking out on her own, and letting go is so hard.

When my children were really young, it was easy for me to feel overwhelmed by the physical and emotional demands of raising children and to feel relief at the respite school provides. At a certain point, however, I became very aware that my time with them as children will come to an end soon. I think perhaps I'm preemptively grieving a bit, even as I'm proud to see them grow up and become the people they were always meant to be.

Mine are 5 and 2 so I have gone back to the days of only one kid. So I am quite happy.
