Uggh! Windy all day here - which is why no dog walking. Amazing how the bit further north I am makes a difference. We got a really bad rain storm around 3:30 or so - I mean blasted the house. You are right. Weird weather this year. Did you get snow the other night? We got a good amount I think Saturday night.

We got just a dusting...it was pretty much melted with a few hours.....I'm getting dog stares too....she loves the cooler weather and it takes more than usual to get her enough exercise to wear her out....

really strange weather this fall! We've had a dusting here and a few flakes there this week, but no accumulation. It also seems like a lot of it has not been forecasted very accurately. Wind and rain came through right around bus stop time at 4:00 today.

So I'd have to wonder if perhaps they share similar chemical components. A certain proportion of esters and phenols would be my guess.

If my guess is correct, then it would possibly trigger the production of seratonin in the brain, which acts as an antidepressant.

I'll have to look that up and get back to you on it. It's something I was curious about, myself, since night-blooming jasmine doesn't grow well in New England and I do have lillies in my garden because they smell so delicious
Aahhh, that's it! These lillies smell exactly like night blooming jasmine... I used to be in love with that smell when we lived in LA, some nights were just fragrant with it. It must have reminded me of that.

I knew it was doing something!

Very interesting to hear that you don't need a sense of smell to get benefits from essential oils. I always thought that's how it worked (probably a pretty common fallacy - or I'm just a dumb a** - probably both ).

Yes...we had that 2"or so of snow last week, then the dusting over the weekend and the snow/rain mix this afternoon...that's it for snow so far this year....very strange indeed. I don't think anything is forecast either (not that that means much around here LOL!)....

It's a common fallacy. I thought the same thing when I heard the term for the first time. I was like - so okay, Vicks Vaporub clears my sinuses, I get that, cause I can smell it. But how does it open my chest so my lungs can breathe? Vicks = aromatherapy. But it can be used in a lot of different ways, not just inhaling fumes. F'instance - lavender buds in the closet keeps out moths. Lavender oil treats 1st and 2nd degree burns (the term aromatherapy was coined by a perfumer who burned himself in the lab, and dunked his hand into the first wet thing he could find - a vat a lavender oil. Speedy healing got him investigating further, and voila - Aromatherapy)

I could go on and on about this stuff. Fun subject but I'm guessing most people here don't wanna know about how to diagram the molecular structure of grapefruit oil.

Hmm, interesting. So, when you heat essential oils in one of those oil burners, do you get the benefit from the vapors being absorbed into the body via breathing? It makes sense that you wouldn't need to smell it per se, now that you explained that.

When I grew up in Australia, tea tree oil was all the rage as a topical treatment for acne and things like that. I think the Aborigines have used in since the year dot. Tiger Balm was also popular for curing headaches and other body pains. I didn't know about lavender oil. Do you use oils a lot in your everyday life?

I could definitely use something uplifting in the house right now, trying to juggle working at home with the DD. A bit stressful.

Where you born there?
I spent 2 wks there back in '03/04 during NYE & stayed on Bondi Beach. Got to see the fireworks go off over the bridge while sitting by the Opera House. Did all the touristy things: saw the 3 sisters, the Rocks, etc.
Am completely in love w/ the place & am begging my dh to plan a trip to go there in a few yrs. & want to see different parts of the country this time.

Yes, I was born in Adelaide and moved to Townsville (up by the Great Barrier Reef) when I was 11. Then I moved to Sydney when I was 18. I lived in Bondi for a while (well, Tamarama, to be precise).

Those fireworks are something, aren't they? I remember the ones on Australia day for the Bicentennial, truly spectacular. They set some off of the bridge so the bridge looked like a giant birthday cake. It was incredible.

Tea Tree is a topnotch topical antiseptic. I use it instead of first aid cream and keep a bottle in the kitchen. Had to use it just 3 days ago, hubby was working on something in the basement and cut his finger.

On burning oils: If you're using a diffuser, then yeah you're getting the benefit by absorbing the fumes. If you're using "scented oil" in an incense oil burner, probably not. Synthetic scented oils don't have the chemicals that do the work of essential oils.

To make you and your kids feel like the home is a "cheery" place, citrus is your best bet. Rather than buy the oils (citrus oils have a very short shelf life, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to buy them since you had to throw them away after a month), you could just buy a couple of ruby red grapefruits, a couple of tangerines, a blood orange if they're in season (never get these off season), a lemon, and a lime. Make some fresh-squeezed juice with it - drink the juice (YUM) ...and then put the cleaned peels in a shallow pan of water and simmer it on the stove for 20 minutes.

Healthy juice for you and your kids, plus healthy air to breath, plus the citrus scent itself is known to be cheerful just in general. Many hospitals in Europe now use lemon essential oil in the air filtration systems, to promote recovery of their patients. Mental health has an effect on physical health and when the hospital air gives off that overall sense of well-being, the patients benefit from it.
