grown kids coming up with cat allergy (teens, baby, son)

One of my college kids was fine while in high school, then when coming home on the weekends from college developed a severely stuffy nose. It happened every weekend. The cats were sleeping a lot in his room. Now we keep the door closed all the time, and it's not as bad, but he still suffers somewhat. Are you sure it's from the cats?
I found out I was allergic to cats in my teens. I never had a cat though. It was one of the things my allergist tested for along with seasonal allergies. I'm also allergic to dogs.
You can become allergic to anything at anytime. My cat allergies are so bad I can't breathe when I'm around a cat. My son is also allergic to cats and dogs.
We had a cat for many years....as time went on I developed a degree of allergies to her. I didn't have any issues being in the house but if I touched her at all, I had to immediately wash my hands really thoroughly or I'd get the whole itchy eyes, face etc etc. I have no idea why things changed. I haven't had any issues with our dog yet..but occasionally when visiting a neighbor, their dog will bother me (but not usually)....
Yes! It happened to my fiance! He ended up going away to college and the first day he was back visiting his freshman year he was allergic to his cats that hes had since he was a baby!
Anyone can develop, or drop, an allergy at any time during their lives. I remember reading somewhere years ago that the allergy cycles generally work in 7-year spans. You can repeat cycles, but won't always. So you could be allergic to bees today, and in 7 years, you're not allergic anymore. Or, you could still be allergic for another 7 years, and then stop being allergic. Or it might repeat every 7 years for the rest of your life. And in the meantime, you turn 14 and pick up an allergy you never had before. And then when you're 21, you drop an allergy you had when you were a kid, and pick up two new ones.
That's what I read, a long time ago. No idea at all if there's any truth to it, but it would seem to make some sense based on personal experience with random allergies I've had over the years.
I never realized that I was allergic to dogs until after I moved out of my mothers house. I have alway had minor sinus issues, when I was 9 I got a dog for x-mas. Slowly I started to develop more and more sinus problems figured it was just my nose acting up more and more as I grew older. Once I moved out within 2 weeks I was no longer congested and sneezy all the time but again I though nothing of it. Then I went back home to visit, within 10 minutes I had an AHA! moment, I am VERY allergic to dogs!!
It's definitely gotten much worse where before I lived in the house with a dog and only suffered from congestion now if I'm in someone's house with a dog for longer than an hour I need an inhaler, if i sleep over forget it I develop bronchitis. And I can't even think of touching one or I get hives.
And it may not be cats. I have developed a severe dust allergy. If we clean and run a dust cloth around, I will be in bed for up to 2 days taking allergy medication. Allergies build and can be a number of things. There will be one final trigger that sets it off. It could be something else in your house other than the cats.
