Julia, I almost fell off my chair to read how to think licking the sweat off somebody is synonymous with nursing a baby. I'm really offended by that comparison. If you can't see the difference I really feel sorry for you.
I agree with you on a lot of topics, Julia but this is not one of them.
What would be the benefit to licking someones sweat off of someone's body or drinking someone's saliva? None that I can think of. What would be the benefit for a baby to drink his or her mother's breastmilk? Survival and optimal nutrition.
I find the comparison of breastfeeding to pooping, coughing up phlegm and sweating to be offensive.
But why expect other people to enjoy or not be offended by watching you breastfeed? Do we generally watch other people pee, or have sex? Those are normal, natural body functions. Sex is required for the survival of our species. Why don't we typically have sex in public or in front of others?

But humans do EAT in front of others. Why not baby humans?

+1. And why is a moderator taking this so off topic, ????
I agree with the gradual weaning, it won't be painful. If you experience engorgement, just pump a bit when you feel yourself getting full. You can always come home after work to nurse as well, doesn't have to be complete weaning. Although I will have to say, when I tried to wean my child on to formula, he gagged so horribly, I didn't know if I should laugh or cry!! I ended up just starting milk a little bit early, but in your case, you would have to do formula. Maybe mixing it helps.... I never tried.

I never said I see them as the same thing. I said that I understand the mindset. I am amused how bodily secretions like sweat and saliva are frequently seen as icky and gross, while another (breastmilk is the secretion of the mammary gland--no different) is viewed as this beautiful, sacred thing. There is nothing more special or wonderful about breastmilk than there is about sweat. They're both juices our bodies make. I do not think breastmilk is gross, but I also don't think sweat, urine, poo, or other bodily secretions and excretions are gross. It's because I recognize them for what they are.

I don't expect people to enjoy watching me breastfeed but I do expect people I know like friends and family to be respectful. I'd like to think that the people who I choose to spend my time with are intelligent and open minded enough to understand the difference between breastfeeding in public and having sex or pooping in public.
As for the general public. If I'm breastfeeding my baby and a random stranger wants to make a snide remark about it, they are free to put their ignorance on display and I will feel free to put them in their place.

There is a huge difference between sweat and breastmilk. One provides a baby with enough nutrients to not only survive but thrive. The other is basically just water and salt.
LOL! I know, I have trespassed on the Holy High Ground.
