I agree with $300 for the weekend. It is a tremendous bargain for you.

wow times have changed. when I babysat (6-7 years ago), I babysat 3 kids for the entire weekend for $50. I also only got paid like $5/hr for regular shifts [I also paid for dinner myself or brought over a meal I cooked beforehand]. I was also expected to help with homework. I was pretty happy.

I wouldn't charge a sitter anything, but the going rate around here for paying sitters is $10-$12 an hour, plus food.

All I know is that given "you get what you pay for," care for my kid is one thing I wouldn't cheap out on.

We have six kids. When I watch them all, I feel good as long as I end up with the same number I started with. :O)

We have always paid well when people watch our kids. You want good people, you can trust. And if you pay well, they will want to be there for you. Although the $300 seems high, it probably isn't for this day and age if it doesn't break your own budgets. We paid $50 to $75 per day for overnights around 8 to 10-years ago.

I would suggest that you ask your neighbors what is the going rate, as it can vary dramatically from place to place.

In my area, most adults would probably charge $350 or more dollars, and that would be a bargain. Just to put that into perspective I usually am paid $80 to $100 just to babysit when someone attends a Saturday afternoon wedding and evening reception and dance (6 to 10 hours).

You, obviously, want someone very reliable and mature. Is there any way that you could find a friend or relative that would do it and you would agree to watch their child for a weekend or for a few/many date nights?
