Benadryl though tempting can be dangerous - first it can have a reverse effect and stimulate the kids - next it is a medication and as such should only be used if required, not as a sedative.

I have heard of people doing this, but in case people aren't aware, the FDA doesn't even want Pediatricians recommending Benadryl anymore for kids under 2. I would bring it with me in case of a bee sting, but that is about it.

I am wondering about when I pick up my car rental as well. Last time they wouldn't even help me put in the car seat, they said because of liability. This time I am not looking forward to having to install two of them myself while two kids are waiting. It will be cold so I guess I'll have to bring them inside the vehicle while I do it.

I would bring a stroller and a car seat for the older one which she/he can sit in during the flight. Be sure to let them get lots of walking exercise before you get on the plane if at all possible though. Bring lots of books and snacks, paper and pen and ask for bulkhead seats. Good luck!

The car seat would be great, but I honestly don't think I can handle all our stuff, the two of them in the stroller and hauling around a car seat as well.

I've had kids, I'm not an over-coiffeured fashionista, I don't wear big sunglasses, but if your kid is sitting behind me squalling or kicking my seat or grabbing the back of the seat and pulling my hair, I'm going to give you the business over it.

Believe me I have been the person in front of a kid screaming and kicking my seat before, it isn't pleasant. I like the idea of asking for bulkhead seats.

There was a really good article I saw yesterday that had some great tips - on msn.com. Of course I can't find it, but here's another that is almost as good:

Ten Tips for Keeping a Toddler Busy on a Plane

Here's another, that talks about taking along new toys from the $ store and bringing them out at intervals - only - Air Travel: Packing.

One thing I always did - and still do - is the moment I get on the plane I wipe down EVERYTHING with an antibacterial wipe. And I have four sons, so being a germophobe is NOT part of my MO. In your instance, your kids can even help - that will be their first distracting activity that might last until - hmmm - take off?!

I second the motion about writing your cell # on your kids. And the leash.

And my parting shot - never leave home without a Sharpie and zip lock bags.

That is what I'd do, yes.

If I do say so myself, I am a flying-with-kids pro, I do it by myself across the country and back every summer with both of our kids and we've done it (DH and I) from Asia to the US twice as well.

Some advice: Get there early and sweet talk the people behind the desk, if they have an unsold seat they will try to put you near so your 18mth old can have a seat. Definitely bring a Snugli or Bjorn to hold her in if she's wiggly or just to help her fall asleep.

If your three year old is wiggly (my DD at 3 would sit still but DS is 3 now and will not) buy one of these.

Safe Airplane Travel for Kids - CARES Child Aviation Restraint System | Kids Fly Safe - CARES | Kids Fly Safe

Greatest thing ever, restrains your child safely and you can stick it in your backpack when you're done.

Bring a ton of crackers or snacks you can hand out slowly one at a time.

Get one of those magnetic write on boards that erase and have a connected pen so you can draw pictures together.

Buy a small new toy for each child and pull it out when everyone is calm and the plane is in the air.

Most importantly, remember that you will likely never see anyone on that plane again, its a finite amount of time and you will survive. They'll surprise you, flying on a plane is very exciting and the white noise makes them sleepy. I actually find going through security to be the worst part, all the shoes off and folding the stroller etc. (advice for that, stay calm, make the people behind you wait and ASK for help holding things or children etc. people mostly want to help)
