She would have another student tap me on the shoulder, and then I would answer her.

If she mentioned my not responding to my formal name, I would say very nicely, "I'm sorry. I didn't hear you."

It's unrealistic to suddenly expect someone to hear and respond to a name they rarely hear.

Furthermore, a child could have an undiagnosed hearing problem. But you go ahead and take the chance of marking a potentially disabled student absent!
I like that idea I agree, it's ridiculous to expect a kid to write out their formal name.

It worked like a charm!

Teach a kid to be disrespectful of the teacher's rule and just ignore the teacher until you get your way. Great parenting on their part

And why is it ridiculous?? When you go to the bank to open an account, do they use the name "Chrissy" or "Christina"? What about your driver license? And credit cards? Lease or mortgage? Any other business transactions??

Using "chrissy" is fine when you're in an informal setting but for any business, including school, you should be using your full, legal name.

I would have done the same thing. Enough "cut slips" sent home and I think he/she would start responding to his/her correct name.

I don't understand why people give kids a name when they do not want it used.

My parents raised leaders, not followers.

My father never tollerated teachers on power trips.

Regardless, she never called attendance. This was simply an issue during class participation.

Sadly, I was named after both grandmothers. My mother chose the first name that had the least offensive nickname.

Trust me. My formal first and middle names are very ugly names.

Terrible names are part of the territory when coming from wealthy families.

Please. The behavior your parents taught you is far from "leadership" behavior. It's more on the lines of disrespectful, obnoxious, and ignorant.

A teacher is on a power trip by setting rules? Maybe your father shouldn't have "tollerated" you thinking the rules don't apply to you.

-----------------

As for your "ugly" names --- maybe your so-called "wealthy" parents should have taught you to be proud of your lineage and confident in who you are and you wouldn't have had such an issue with your name.

So if you named your kid Bartholomew you'd want them to embrace it and WANT to be called my their formal name in school....so all the other kids would have a field day tormenting them?

Instead of picking a nick name and going by that.

If I had a name that was like that, I wouldn't answer to it either.
