This was posted before, and this is a great thing for both Pittsbrugh and Philadelphia. Hopefully we get more companies and institutions working together between the two cities in the future. This can only have positive results, and hopefully will go towards showing Harrisburg how important both of these cities are to the state. This, and further intercity cooperation could also lead to increased Amtrak rail service between the two in the future.

Ford investing $1 billion in autonomous research company in Pittsburgh

Tim McNulty, spokesman for Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, said the city has been told the company expects to hire 200 employees in the city within the next year. The company will be based in Pittsburgh but also will have development sites in Michigan and California, two other states with heavy investment in auto technology development.

Mr. Fitzgerald said Argo hasn't said where it might put its headquarters, but he expects it will be in the city near the universities.

Not exactly. The Post tends to be very-Pro Pittsburgh. Of course, someone in the media isn't telling the whole truth.

Argo AI will be smooshed into the automaker’s existing robotics unit (with staff in the hundreds), doing work in Pittsburgh (home to Carnegie Mellon), Michigan, and Silicon Valley.

Argo AI plans to have 200 employees by year's end. They will be split between Silicon Valley, Michigan and Pittsburgh

I can't imagine how these automated cars are going to react during events like the whites outs and ice we received during the snowstorm this week. Cars with human drivers were sliding all over the place.

In a way the Uber and Ford/Argo research is sad news. The company is gaining 200 positions but millions will be out of jobs when truckers and taxi/Uber drivers have been replaced with automation.

Uber's NOT going anywhere. Pittsburgh's only going to continue solidifying itself as a burgeon Robotics, AI, Autonomous Technology hub.

With Ford moving into the landscape it's only bring more competition for talent now. I fully expect to see Uber ramp up investments. This will probably bring other Auto manufacturers into the region to stake a claim in the Autonomous technology revolution.

And this is all happening in the CITY OF PITTSBURGH .... Not Suburban Office Parks.

High-tech investments keep coming for Pittsburgh area

Ford’s announcement Friday that it will invest $1 billion over the next five years in Pittsburgh-based Argo AI to develop technology for its own self-driving vehicle continues a string of high-tech investments in the regional economy.

Argo expects to hire 200 employees by the end of the year and will meet with Mayor Bill Peduto on Monday to discuss possible locations for its headquarters. The company also will have employees at Ford facilities in Detroit and San Francisco, but most of them are expected to be based here.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced it would join about 100 companies and foundations to open the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Innovation Hub at the former LTV steel company site in Hazelwood now known as Almono. That nonprofit will invest $253 million over five years to develop autonomous manufacturing processes in a facility that is expected to be self-sustaining in the future through patents and licensing agreements.

In addition, Uber is in the midst of a $1 billion, 10-year investment in its self-driving vehicle that is being tested in live traffic on a limited course Downtown and in the Strip District. The company already has more than 700 local employees at its Advanced Technology Center in the Strip and could be at more than 1,000 by the end of the year.

Mr. Peduto said that is about a year ahead of Uber’s initial projection and he said he wouldn’t be surprised if Uber’s employment reaches 2,000 by the end of 2018.

You must be very delusional about the local job market. Pittsburgh's unemployment is near 6 percent and higher than the national average. Other growing cities still adding jobs are around 3.9 percent or lower unemployment. Those places too have tech jobs and are in competition for those same workers that Pittsburgh hopes to lure. Other than healthcare, college and a tiny tech boom what other jobs are available to outsiders? It is still a very limited economy there. If you lose a decent paying job and you aren't in one of those fields you are most likely leaving to go elsewhere.

I know Pittsburgh has been a declining city for a long time. The tech sector is a positive, but to say Pittsburgh will be able to compete with the sunbelt, the south or big tech hubs is insane.

Do you have a job that's based with a Pittsburgh company or do you have a job located elsewhere that allows you to work remotely from anywhere? If you do you have no idea what the true Pittsburgh economy is like
1) People are already MOVING HERE ... Pittsburgh has the 3rd highest rate of inbound Millennials in the US. Only Jersey City and DC have more. How do you think Allegheny County and Pittsburgh are finally going to post Growth number against high elderly deaths with birth rates still being ultra low.

2) Quite the contrary. Little fact lesson for you. Pittsburgh (the city) has a 4.6 unemployment rate (Damn Good Number), Allegheny's Rate is at 5.1, Metro Pittsburgh is at 6% which is still a damn good number when you factor in basket case (we're waiting for the "Mills" to comeback) counties like Armstrong, Westmoreland, Fayette Counties have almost 10% unemployment.

3) who said anything about completing with Sunbelt, the thread is Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia. Plus I said Pittsburgh is a "BURGEON" Technology hub. Look up burgeon and know what it means before you come at me with your debbie downer FAKE NEWS that Pittsburgh is still a loser.
