I live in FL and grew up in PA, but we use to call it "Taxavania"!!

I refer to jersey as "the sh*tHole across the river" haha if people ask where i'm from i just say Philly..

Funny thread. The OP is definitely spot on, though. I've never come across another state where natives will use the postal abbreviation to refer to their state (with the possible exception of DC, but that's more of a city/federal district hybrid, and I suppose it's not the same). It's just one of those things.

PA - DE - NJ - NY all use the term "Jersey" as opposed to New Jersey......MD is the closest state I can think of that says "New Jersey"....Even Pittsburgh says Jersey.

I have lived in Pa for 14 years. Before that in MD only 3 miles away. I grow saying going to PA. I think it just started as slang way back and stuck. That is how you know you are from here. The transplants say Pennsylvania.

I'm a transplant and I say PA! I learned it when I lived in MD.

We've done this since I was a little girl....but take the periods out of the abbreviations....hence, PA or CA, TN...those are all post office abbreviations. We say on the east coast....I'm going to LA...but never CA. We say I'm flying into LAX or PHL....airline appreviations. I don't question it anymore now with the computer language. LOL.
