No worries about that when you give here: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
And they are efficient. They get my 'charity money' in a lump sum, every Christmas.
I agree with your excellent point that there are ways to know that our donation will be well used. There are a number of worthy charities out there in addition to your very good example. But the thread was about giving to individual people we encounter on the street and that is what I was attempting to address.
If they are mentally disabled or something, I will, otherwise I wont. You never know if they just buy drugs/alcohol with it or use it wisely. I wish there were never beggars and that they all had a home/job. I kind of pitty them, but I never know their situation.
I think that kind of talk is mean and disgusting. I wish somebody could explain to me why anybody would even find that amusing Are you trying to say that you would like to shoot them or are you trying to say that you are a hunter and this person should get a gun also and go out and hunt there food? Please explain because I clearly don't get that at all

Obviously you do not have a sense of humor Aptor Hours.
I usually ask them in return "What are ye sellin'???" in the voice of that arms merchant from Resident Evil-4.
One time, I got a sweet knife for $10!!!
But seriously, I get hounded by these guys walking amongst the trucks at truckstops whenever I'm sitting there for whatever reason.
I'll offer them can-food and most of the time they'll usually take it.
The rest of the time, they give me this "useless POS" look and storm off.
Apart from that, I'm never bothered when roaming through a downtown area where this is a problem.
Mainly because I sort of already dress like a bum myself.

I would say it DOES apply since, once you give your $ away (possibly to a scammer as articles have shown) you then do not have those assets to give to those whom you KNOW are truly in need.
Never. I will acknowledge them and politely tell them no. Everybody deserves to be treated like a human being and not an invisible nuisance. Even when they have some crazy story or scheme I simply tell them sorry, I don't give my hard earned meager income away for nothing. If they offer a service like music or directions then I'll spare my pocket change or a dollar bill.
Always. As a Christian I feel that I'd be going against Jesus' teachings if I didn't, though I don't give much because there are shelters out there. I know that some may use it for alcohol. It crosses my mind, but it's just as likely that they simply need a bite to eat. I don't know their story, and I don't want that on my conscience.
I have and especially if they have a dog. I gave a guy a $5 dollar bill in Key West that had an adorable dog with sunglasses on and for my $5 donation I got to pat the dog learn about his name and the derivation and just chat with the guy. I really enjoyed it to be quite honest, but, that is just me
They use the dogs to get more sympathy. In the area around the WTC in NYC, I've seen different junkies begging with the same dog. They must pass it around.

I think it's very unlikely that they simply need a bite to eat. There are food pantries and soup kitchens all over the place, and the truly hungry know where they are.
The people asking for money on the street are junkies, crackheads, and drunks. If I were a better person, perhaps I'd have more sympathy for them, too, but I just don't.
