Welcome to America. He had the bad luck to be born in the only developed country in the world where that can happen. His chances of emigrating to another country is near zero, because every country in the world can smell Americans coming with their medical bills.
What a crock...!!! You probably really believe that. There are planes leaving every hour if you wish to live in another country that will treat you better..!!
Bankruptcy is the best option for your son. Get the debt discharged so he can go on with day to day life. His credit scores will build quickly, and he is already int he habit of using cash.
Within in about 2 years he'll be able to apply for credit. It won't have a big impact on his day to day over the next few years.
I think the OP stated that a hiring physical would determine it - even if its not asked. If its material (i.e. low blood sugar risk and operating heavy equipment) I think they can use it as a hiring decision.
Even ADA can't make it so that all jobs are available to all people. They just keep it so that people who are able to do a job can't be discriminated against. If there's a valid reason (seizure disorder, etc..) the employer from a liability stand point has ground to refuse to hire.
People are quick to jump to what is legal when applying for a job. A simple way to explain it is...A person with type I diabetes applies for a school bus driver job. They don't ask during the hiring process. The person is hired and is driving 30 kids home after school, has a low blood sugar, has a seizure because of the low blood sugar and drives off the road killing all the kids. Of course they are going to ask. Driver's licenses don't have "diabetic" stamped across thier licenses, how else are they going to find out? Same with heavy equipment operators, over-the-road semi-truck driver's, cab/bus driver's. I do know you can have diabetes and still apply for CERTAIN types of CDL licenses intra-state. Wouldn't you like to know if the daycare person who is working alone one day has diabetes and could possibly pass out from low blood sugar while taking care of your 6 month old baby? The military does not accept Type I diabetics for good reason. If they are at war and out on the field, have a low blood sugar, they put every other soldier at risk. I'm the parent of a diabetic and realize that there are reasons for they way some things are done. SAFETY

I work for a large school bus operation in Va, and we definitely ask applicants about diabetes (and some other conditions). If a person is on insulin they can not drive a school bus, period. There is a physical that will pick it up, plus all drivers' personal doctors must fill out an annual statement of all meds that they are on.
Even a non-insulin Type 2 diabetic must bring a fresh A1C to the annual physical....if it is 9 or above, they are taken off the road for 3 months to try and get it down. If they can't or need to go on insulin...they're G O N E.
What's wrong with bankruptcy for him? If he has no assets to protect and presumably not a high paying job to be garnished, BK makes sense. Assuming his does a Chapter 7, all of his debt will be discharged immediately (liquidation) and his credit will recover in 7 years.
For those who blithely say they are going to move to another country for health coverage- you cannot emigrate to a lot of places without applying, visa, etc. Same as here. You can't just plop in somewhere and get medical and social benefits.
