Yes, You are missing something. The missing word here is ** DEBT. **
He did not say he wouldn't cut a $xx.xx check at the vet from his checking account. He is saying if he did not have $xx.xx to spend on his pet, he would not BORROW $400 and go into debt.
Why don't you read the thread title. It asks if you would go into debt. Clearly the person I quoted said he would not. What does cutting a check have to do with anything?
I wouldnt put myself into hardcore debt over a pet, even tho I LOVE my kitty to death. LOVE him like a true family member, however I'm also practical and reasonable and wouldn't want a treatment for a pet to haunt me for the next 30 years,.
We have a family dog that has run up an over $9000 bill so far for cancer treatments over the last 11 months, the dog is doing great and it is still fairly young, if the dog was near the end of its normal life expectancy I would have not wanted to spend very much. All my dogs are dogs that were strays or unwanted and it is easy to spend a $1000 on a stray with problems. It is possible to buy health insurance for pets now to minimize future vet bills. We can easily afford the vet bills so I can't say what I would do if we didn't have enough money.
Have any of you ever noticed that a vet will never recommend putting and animal to sleep even when it is the most logical thing to do?
I had a vet who recommended that that we put our dog to sleep as soon as he was diagnosed with bone cancer although our first choice was to take him to die at home as she said that it will be very painful for him in months to come.
I wished she was the vet I had to deal with when my cat was going through chronic renal failure that ran my bills up to $5,000-7,000 in veterinary bills total of 8 months. I repeatedly asked the vet if it would be recommended to put him down and suggested over and over I really didn't want my cat to suffer anymore after seeing him not eating for two days and purring the whole night by himself (it's comforting mechanism when a cat's in pain). But no, the vet had to recommend an overnight stay and a blood transfusion for the anemia. The day I picked him his ashes, I parked in the back and noticed the vet's Mercedes Benz in the Reserve Parking. The cat was a complete sweetheart and would greet me at the door everyday without fail other than the days when he was extremely ill when I come up from work. He was worth all the medical care I could afford but I just very wary of vets now.
I never take my pets to a vet. They live as long as anyone else's and when they die there is always a homeless pet available to replace them. I refuse to take on any debt especially to extend an animal's life. One hundred years ago people would have thought it was crazy to spend hard-earned money on this scam. Thousands of perfectly healthy animals are murdered by animal control departments and people are spending thousands to keep dying pets alive? Now that is truly sad.
Isn't if strange that people abort children because the child would be an inconvience and expensive, but talk about the ethics about taking care of an animal?
