$7K is still $7K. It would pay for a pretty nice vacation, high-end purse, down payment on a pretty high end luxury car...

We were two educated people working making about the same. Yes we were surprised by the marriage penalty. Married in august and slammed by the marriage penalty in April. It wasn't $7k but I'll tell you it hurt.

And even if they did make the numbers you state, it's their money, why should they be penalized for being educated and married?

What exactly is this marriage penalty you're talking about?

I was wondering that as well. I am married, and don't recall any penalties from a Federal tax perspective.

Marriage penalty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Essentially when a married couple pays more in taxes than they would have if they had both been single.

It goes both ways though as it can be a bonus too.

A couple suffers a “marriage penalty†if its partners pay more income tax as a married couple than they would have as two single individuals. Conversely, the couple receives a “marriage bonus†if its partners pay less income tax as a married couple than they would have as two single individuals. This calculator lets you see whether couples in particular situations receive tax penalties or bonuses from marriage. For more information on marriage penalties and bonuses, see this TPC Tax Topic.
NOTE: This calculator compares the taxes a married couple would pay filing a joint return with what they would pay if they were not married and each filed as single or head of household. It does not compare the taxes a married couple would pay filing jointly versus filing separately.
Here is a calc for it. Tax laws changed years ago to the point it's not a penalty like it once was

There have been numerous articles both in the lay press and social research stating how marriage is propagating social inequality:

Marriage as a 'luxury good': The class divide in who gets married and divorced - Money - TODAY.com

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/08/fa...ines.html?_r=0

In the case of increasingly common highly educated, dual income families, the marriage penalty is very real.

From the calculator:

Couple, one earner makes $350K, the other $50K (classic high powered executive marrying staff member): there is a $292 penalty.

Couple, both earners make $200K (two doctors/lawyers/dentists/etc): there is a $10,255 penalty for being married.

I didn't say it didn't exist but it doesn't impact very many people(in terms of a % of the married pop) in a big way. For the masses there is a misinformation in terms of the marriage penalty

Right, it's sort of self-serving to say having an SO doesn't create an added cost when you are pre-supposing you will take on that cost to get an SO in the first place.

Why not do a 3 way category split - single and wanting to stay that way, in a romantic relationship and wanting to stay that way, or single but trying not to be?

Refusing to wear raggedy clothing has nothing to do with a SO just as you could find a SO that would be fine with you looking raggedy. Don't you suppose that's an option too?

I'm not splitting any categories
