Pretty much this. If we didn't have kids, we'd be retiring early in about 3-5 years (we are 40 and 41). This forum has its fair share of high income earners with no kids. I stopped comparing myself to their numbers long ago.

And they'll have to eat their words which will be very, very bitter if one day they find themselves out of a job and unable to find another one which is very possible (at least one within the same pay range, or any job really). Oh, of course, they'll say it will never happen to them. I guess they're not aware it can happen to anyone. No one's job is 100% secure and there's never any guarantee that you'll find a similar one; that gets harder and harder as you get older. Then of course there are those that trust in their net worth, so that if something happens to their job that think it won't matter. That's a real false sense of security. What's the guarantee that what you have now will be worth something in the future? (Even cash--I hope everyone's aware that those paper dollar bills are actually not worth very much now; we're all just kind of playing like they are).

The only ones I feel who can snub the poor (without the possibility of their words coming back to haunt them one day), if they have such a cold heart, are those that are self-reliant--can grow their own food and supply their own water. Those are the only things you really need to survive (and shelter, but I would imagine these people would have and know how to maintain a house). Then, it's a question of would you enjoy that kind of life, or would it just be surviving?

I see nothing embarrassing about the post...I do see that MOST americans are wasteful and spendthrifts and SPOILED. I've worked hard and had a good life and NEVER made the $$$ some talk about here...but now live on about $17K and do have a rent control apt for 25 yrs now and LIVE SIMPLY. I believe I always lived simply and grateful for what I have had..being born after depression gives one a totally different perspective.

I do feel for the MANY hard working poor people and especially the ones who do the grunt work americans don't want to do...like picking our foods in the fields and often dying in those fields....

I'll bet many don't think as I do.

Plus everything has skyrocketed in prices....I think it's called mega inflation. Great for stockholders.

I will add this about poor people, our country was built on the backs of the poor from other parts of the world like my grandparents and maybe a lot of your grands and great grands....these poor people made our country with the help of the Rockerfellers, Mellons, Fords who were born with some non rusty spoons in their mouths.

BUT, amassing money is easy when you have a decent job, don't have dependents, and when you don't have to pony up for their school, their food, clothing, entertainment, braces, transportation, and a host of other things. Further, you don't have a house to maintain, property taxes to pay, tuition, the whole ball of wax. So you're leaving a lot out of the equation.

Yes, my kids all have jobs and no, we don't spend money like pimps with a week to live. We put money back every month and have accumulated a nice nest egg. But I sure as hell wouldn't slam someone who wasn't able to save the way we have. There are people who face job loss, health issues, aging parents, and a host of unforeseeable problems that tax their ability to save. You're obviously young, because you seem to have no idea what life can throw at you when you least expect it.

In other words, quit bragging online and critiquing others when you have about the cushiest life imaginable. It's one thing to discuss personal finance. But yapping on about your own money while taking others to task is indulging in short man's disease.
Exactly!!

And I didn't see that OP had these expenses:

Renters insurance, Medical Insurance, Medical Expenses, Dental and Eye Expenses, Cable, Internet, Cell phone.....??

Be very grateful you have a rent control apartment, they do not exist outside CA and NYC.

I am very grateful believe me....but the hungry landlords can make increases to the sky or what market will bear when one moves out...so MOST don't move if they are Smart. I've heard that our RC was fashioned about that in Boston...don't know if MA still has RC.

Is that a NYC thing? In my neck of the woods, shelters have waiting lists. Until that $15K earner becomes homeless, they can't even get on the waiting list.
