Seriously, anyone that considers living in University City to be an "urban pioneer" is going to feel uncomfortable almost anywhere else in Philadelphia except maybe Rittenhouse Square.

As far as prices go, well it can be pricey, but that's a factor of this being a very desirable neighborhood (go figure). You can still find cheaper listings around (my place is only $425 a month) so just be on the lookout. You shouldn't have to settle for a place way out on the edges. Although there are some nicer blocks up towards Malcolm X Park. I had a friend who lived out near 50th-ish and Pine and never felt threatened walking out there, even at night.
I never said that people who live in University City were urban Pioneers, just that the real UC is very expensive. University City wanabes on the fringe are the urban Pioneers.

Wyynfield? LOL! Yeah it was nice but it still was in W.P., They had just a little bit of drama there as well.
