Hi,
I will be working in the Bala Cynwyd area soon and would like to live close so the commute will be short. I hope to keep rent low hopefully under $700 and I have a dog 60+lbs. I know these are some demanding conditions, but am looking for some advice on possible 1 bedroom apartment ideas. Thanks in advance!

the Main Line is a pretty diverse area that includes some of the wealthiest towns in the country but also some very nice middle class areas. You could try West Philly, but there can be some dangerous areas, so choose wisely and do as much research as possible. There are some nice areas in Overbrook (Will Smith, Seth Green and Wilt Chamberlain are from this area), Roxborough and Manayunk.

A better option, if you can bump up your rent limit another $100-200, I would suggest Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion or Bala Cynwyd.

Insider tip, if you're from out of the area, it's pronounced "bail-uh kin wood" but most people just call it Bala.

How about Manayunk? Right across the Schuylkill River from Bala Cynwyd , but has Main Street with tons of bars and restaurants, it is relatively cheap, and has good public transit access to Center City.

Bah-luh, not Bail-luh, and if you're looking for anywhere that's dog-friendly, the overwhelming majority of Area rental apartments will be off-limits, regardless of rent. Your best bet is probably seeking an affordable row or twin in/around Wynnefield, Overbrook, or Upper Darby if you can up your rent a little--maybe outer Roxborough (Manayunk will almost undoubtedly be too expensive).

also, not too many people can agree on how to pronounce anything. Point is, don't pronounce it Balla.

I grew up two minutes from Bala, and never heard anyone pronounce it Bail-luh. Maybe that's a more common pronunciation outside the Western suburbs.
