My friend just bought a house and it's at 25th and Manton. Was curious of someone could give me an indication of the neighborhood if I move in with them?

I lived in Philly for 8 years and was down that way on many occasions. I'll be honest, it's not an area I liked to be at when dark. It's just south of the Italian Market area on South street and pretty close to Pat's Cheesesteaks and 10 blocks from Broad Street. Is it an area I ever lived or wanted to live? No but I haven't been there in over 10 years, it could have improved but I'm not that optimistic. These kind of things usually go in the other direction. Why not take a visit first and see what you think? If it is ok for you than write your experience here so we know.

I used to live close to center city and it was great, sometimes a little dicey even there but manageable. Where you are going I dare to say the best way to describe it would be "The Hood".

I spent a good deal of time in Phila and would, unfortunately have to agree with Chefkeys assessment.

just watch CBS morning news and see how many shootings and robberies happen in that area..

It is not confined to that area though...there has been some recent muggings in and around Liberty shopping area on Chestnut.

Sad, but there will always be lowlifes preying on decent hardworking people wherever you go.

Ask in the Philadelphia forum.

It's not south of the Italian Market and it's a better neighborhood than it used to be, though still gentrifying.

Thanks for the correction, I meant South of South St near the Italian Market.

Not sure why you didn't think so as my memory is hazy so I just map checked. Indeed, my first post was correct, Manton is Southwest of the Italian Market and Pat's is 4 blocks south of that. Been shopping there many many times, I used to go to a kitchen supply store right in that area and of course walked the market looking for good deals. Esposito's was always a favorite of mine. So, you always will have that as a positive if you move there, I'm just not thinking the area around 25th and Manton is great.

The Italian Market is at 9th St. The OP is asking about a place well west of there, not just south of the market.

What the....? Lot of misinformation here. 25th & Manton is NOWHERE near the Italian Market, and NOWHERE near South St. You're right on the boundary of Point Breeze and Grays Ferry, under the crumbling CSX viaduct. So, in other words, not a good location by any stretch of the word. You're not even really close to anything, either.

OP: I wouldn't go near that area with a 100-foot pole. And I'm saying that as someone who actually lives in Point Breeze now.
